Owls take early lead, late rally falls short
Box Score
ARLINGTON, Va. - The Temple baseball team nearly mounted a comeback after being up early in the Owls contest with George Washington on Friday afternoon, but the Colonials managed to hold on for a 5-4 win at Barcroft Park. Temple is now 24-28 overall, 4-19 in Atlantic 10 play while George Washington improves to 18-36, 8-15 in A-10 action.
Junior Brant Norlander (3-6) tossed three innings in the start, walking five and allowing four runs to the Colonials. Redshirt-sophomore Steve Visnic came on for the next two and allowed one run, with redshirt-freshman Ryan Kuehn throwing three shutout innings to finish up the game.
The Owls offense was potent with 10 hits in the contest, but struggled to bring home runners with 13 men left on base. Sophomore Elijah Yarborough drove in a pair of runs on homer and a sacrifice fly, while redshirt-junior Steve Nikorak also went deep in the contest.
GW's Tommy Gaitley (6-6) earned the win with eight innings of work, allowing three runs to the Owls and striking out 12. He would be relieved by Joe Richardson in the ninth who earned the save.
Temple picked up a run in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Adrian Perez reached base on an error with one out and the Owls took advantage of the misplay, as back-to-back singles by Nikorak and senior Ryan Ferguson loaded the bases. Sophomore Daniel Dragos stood in and took one for the team, being hit by a pitch to plate a run. In the second, Yarborough stepped up with a one-out homer to left field.
The Colonials rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the second, taking a 5-2 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth.
The Owls chipped away in the eighth, managing to plate a run on Yarborough's sacrifice fly which scored Dragos. A double by senior Byron McKoy nearly sparked a two-out rally, but Gaitley worked his way out of the jam. In the ninth, Nikorak led off the frame with a home run to dead center, giving the Owls hope for a comeback. Freshman Will Remillard hit a two-out single to keep things going, with a walk to Dragos putting runners on first and second. The rally ended as Richardson got junior Taylor Juran to strike out for the final out.
The series wraps tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with freshman Matt Hockenberry facing GW's redshirt-senior Bobby Lucas, Jr.
