PHILADELPHIA - Taking a break from the Atlantic 10 schedule, Temple women's basketball will face Big 5 rival Penn at home on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Owls (9-8) and the Quakers (7-7) will play at 3:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall with both looking for their first Big 5 win of the season.

Villanova has already claimed this year's Big 5 title after sweeping the city series with a perfect record of 4-0. For Temple this will be just the second Big 5 game of the season, while Penn is already 0-3. The Owls are currently 3-1 in the A-10 and riding a two-game win streak, while the Quakers are 0-1 in the Ivy League and have lost five straight after starting the season at 7-2.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple is 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, and all three of its wins have seen the teams separated by just a point in the final minute as the Owls have now proved they can hang on in tight games.

•The Owls are coming off a narrow, 67-64 home win vs. Duquesne on Jan. 18 and a 61-57 at Dayton on Jan. 15...The Owls led by 10 at halftime of the Dayton game before the Flyers came back to take a one-point lead with under six minutes remaining, and Temple led by as many as 11 in the second half against Duquesne before the Dukes also came back and also led by a point in the second half.

Shey Peddy scored a game-high 21 points at Dayton and a game-high 22 points vs. Duquesne, and currently ranks second among all players in the A-10 with 15.9 points per game...She also ranks third in steals with 47 (2.8 per game).

Victoria Macaulay has averaged 11.0 rebounds in Temple's four A-10 games including a career-high 13 boards in the win at Richmond on Jan. 7...She leads the A-10 so far for conference games only.

•Senior BJ Williams has led the team in assists in 11 games this season, and is currently second among all players in the A-10 with 77 assists (4.8 per game).

•Penn is 7-7 overall after starting the season 7-2 but losing the last five straight...The Quakers are already 0-3 in the Big 5...Sophomore Alyssa Baron leads the team with 16.5 points per game.

SERIES RECORD
Temple holds a 47-15 advantage in the all-time series against Penn. The Owls have won the last seven straight contests as well as 14 of the last 16. Last year's meeting was the closest of all seven wins, as Temple held on for a 62-55 win at the Palestra. Two years ago the Owls won 55-31 at home. Penn's last win was on Dec. 9, 2003 by a score of 70-64, at Temple.

MAC ATTACK
Victoria Macaulay has been crashing the glass in a big way over Temple's last few games, so much so that she leads all players in the A-10 for conference games with 11.0 rebounds per game. She has recorded double-digit rebounds in four of the Owls' last five games including a career-high 13 boards in a win at Richmond on Jan. 7.

VILLANOVA CLAIMS BIG 5 TITLE
Although Temple will play only its second Big 5 game of the season against Penn, the title has already been claimed by Villanova who went a perfect 4-0 in the city series. The 2010-11 Big 5 title was Temple's alone as the Owls edged Saint Joseph's 52-49 on Feb. 23, completing a 4-0 sweep. The previous year was the first in six seasons that Temple had NOT won or shared the title, and this year now marks only the second time that has happened in the last eight years. Last year's title was Temple's ninth overall and eighth outright since the Big 5 tradition was established for women's basketball in 1979-80.

BIGGEST COMEBACK WIN IN TWO YEARS
Temple's recent 56-55 win in the A-10 opener at Richmond saw the Owls overcome a 14-point deficit en route to the victory. Temple has had plenty of near-comebacks this season and last, but none that resulted in a win since a season-opening victory in 2009-10 when Temple came back from 18 down to defeat Illinois in overtime.

McCARTHY NAMED A-10 AND BIG 5 POW
Kristen McCarthy averaged 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds over Temple's wins at Western Michigan and Richmond, and earned A-10 co-Player of the Week as well as Big 5 Player of the Week honors for her efforts. The week was capped off by hitting the game-winning jumper with 0.2 seconds remaining in TU's 56-55 win at Richmond.

RIGHT IN IT
Five of the Owls' losses so far came as part of a six-game road swing, and they lost the first four by an average of only seven points. Temple was within two points in the final minute of three of those losses (#24/25 Ohio State., Northern Illinois and St. John's).

BJ DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
Senior BJ Williams has led the Owls in assists in 11 of 17 games so far this season, and has already racked up 77 total assists (4.8 per game) to rank second among all players in the Atlantic 10.

PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy continues to find ways to grab the ball from Temple's opponents, as she leads the team and ranks third in the A-10 this season with 47 steals (2.8 per game). Peddy set the program's all-time record for steals in a single season last year with 104, recording at least one steal in all but one game. Her 3.2 spg a year ago ranked second in the A-10 and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I.

McCARTHY MOVES INTO FIFTH ALL-TIME
With a game-high 14 points against Villanova on Dec. 22, Kristen McCarthy moved into fifth place all-time at Temple in career scoring, now with 1,423 points.

McCarthy started the season in 11th place, but advancing further will take some time as Kamesha Hairston ('07) stands in fourth place with 1,573 points (150 ahead of McCarthy).

McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On Nov. 4, it was announced that Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition. The 10 finalists will be announced in late January, at which time a national ballot will be available to fans. To learn more, visit the website at www.seniorclassaward.com.

PEDDY NAMED TO NAISMITH WATCH LIST
Shey Peddy has been named to the 2011-12 Naismith Trophy Women's early-season watch list, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The list includes the 50 top women's college players from 35 schools, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 season.

RPI REPORT
Temple is 64th in the RPI of 342 teams. The A-10's top team is Richmond, ranked 36th.

NOW THE TEAM TO BEAT
After four years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls are finally picked first in a tie with Dayton. Last year Temple was picked third and ended up second, and two years ago was picked fifth and went on to tie for second.
