No. 8 Temple Fencing Defeats No. 9 Penn; Falls to No. 1 Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - On Saturday, the No. 8 Temple fencing team traveled to State College, Pa. for the third time this season. This time around, the Owls took part in the Penn State Multi-Meet.

  “Overall, despite some individual struggles, the team did well against some very strong opponents, " head coach Niki Franke said.  "We must continue to improve and grow as we will meet PSU and several other Top 10 schools later in the season”

The day started with a 14-13 win over No. 9-ranked, cross-city rival, University of Pennsylvania, led by a 6-3 squad victory in sabre.

The Owls followed up with a 26-1 performance over Drew University before round three featured a matchup against the No. 1 team in the country, host Penn State.

The Nittany Lions lived up to their billing, as the Cherry and White fell 10-17. Against the Nitany Lions, the Owls' foil squad captured an impressive 7-2 win.

The day concluded with back-to-back 20-7 wins over the University of North Carolina and Haverford College.

Leading the charge for Temple was junior foilist Mikayla Varadi, who went an impressive 11-2 on the day, including a perfect 3-0 record against Penn State.

Joining Varadi in foil was senior Alyssa Lomuscio, also 3-0 against Penn State (7-2 overall).  Sophomore Teagan Kilpatrick went 6-1, while senior Epiphany Georges recorded a 6-3 result and senior Danielle Jones finished the day at 5-2.

The epee squad was led by Kimberly Howell, going 9-3.  Chantal Montrose registered 8 wins against 7 losses.
Senior Krystal Jones (5-1) and Jillian Bratton (5-7) completed the squad.

Kamali Thompson (6-3) and Lauren Rangel-Friedman (6-1) topped the sabre squad, closely followed by Emily Dodson (5-1), Tasia Ford (4-5), Andrea Haley (4-2), and Tiki Kastor (3-5).

Saturday's results run Temple Fencing's season record to 12-2.  The Cherry and White return to the strip next weekend with two days of meets at Northwestern University, including matches against four more nationally-ranked opponents.
