Game Notes vs. Richmond (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA - The slate is now wiped clean for Temple women's basketball as the Owls (6-7) head into Atlantic 10 play, and they begin the conference schedule with a 7:00 p.m. game at Richmond on Saturday, Jan. 7. Temple's first two A-10 games will provide a tough test, as Richmond (12-2) and St. Bonaventure (13-2) sit atop the league standings after the non-conference season.

Fans have a number of options to follow the game at Richmond (live stats, live audio, live webcast), which can be found HERE.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple finished its non-conference schedule (other than upcoming Penn) with a record of 6-7, most recently getting a 64-52 road win at Western Michigan.

•In December the Owls had a five-game homestand that saw them win three in a row before losing the final two...On Dec. 30, Temple suffered a 65-54 loss to #8/7 Duke...The Owls whittled a 19-point deficit down to five in the final minute but were not able to complete the comeback.

•The Owls had a three-game win streak snapped in a disappointing, 56-47 Big 5 loss to Villanova on Dec. 22...The Wildcats made 8-of-10 shots to start the game and the Owls never recovered.

•Temple is 15-14 all-time in Atlantic 10 openers and has won six out of the last eight including last year's opener at Charlotte by a narrow margin of 60-57.

Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition.

Shey Peddy was named to the 2011-12 Naismith Women's College Player of the Year preseason watch list...She was one of 50 Division I student-athletes named to the list.

•Richmond is currently second in the A-10 standings with a 12-2 record after the non-conference season...The Spiders are riding a six-game win streak, most recently with wins vs. James Madison and Lehigh at the Lehigh Christmas Classic Tournament...Three players average in double figures in scoring for Richmond, led by senior guard Abby Oliver with 16.3 ppg.

SERIES RECORD
Temple is 11-3 all-time against Richmond, and the Owls have won six straight. Last year Temple drained a program-record 14 three-pointers at home against the Spiders en route to an 84-56 win. Two years ago the Owls beat the Spiders 77-67 in Richmond. Richmond's last win was a 56-54 decision on its home court in 2006.

ATLANTIC 10 OPENERS
Temple is 15-14 all-time in Atlantic 10 openers and has won six out of the last eight including last year's opener at Charlotte by a narrow margin of 60-57.

BJ DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
Senior BJ Williams has led the Owls in assists in eight of 13 games so far this season, and has already racked up 57 total assists (4.8 per game) to rank second among all players in the Atlantic 10.

PEDDY THEFT
Shey Peddy continues to find ways to grab the ball from Temple's opponents, as she leads the team and ranks third in the A-10 this season with 39 steals (3.0 per game).

Peddy set the program's all-time record for steals in a single season last year with 104, recording at least one steal in all but one game, and has also notched at least one steal in all but one game so far in 2011-12. Her 3.2 spg a year ago ranked second in the A-10 and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I.

SHATTERING THE GLASS
In Temple's wins vs. Auburn and Kent State, the Owls averaged 15 more rebounds per game than their opponents (44.5 to 29.5). Temple's 52 rebounds vs. Kent State were the most in nearly three years, since the Owls pulled down 52 boards in an OT win at Tulane on Dec. 28, 2008.

Having allowed its opponents just 33.8 rpg this season, Temple ranks second among all teams in the A-10 in rebounding defense.

McCARTHY MOVES INTO FIFTH ALL-TIME
With a game-high 14 points against Villanova on Dec. 22, Kristen McCarthy moved into fifth place all-time at Temple in career scoring, now with 1,362 points.

McCarthy started the season in 11th place, but advancing further will take some time as Kamesha Hairston ('07) stands in fourth place with 1,573 points (211 ahead of McCarthy).

NO QUIT
Temple has proved its toughness with some big comebacks in recent seasons, and showed it once again on Nov. 18 at #24/25 Ohio State, on Nov. 25 vs. #5/4 Texas A&M and yet again on Dec. 30 vs. #8/7 Duke.

TU was down 16 with 10 mins left at Ohio St. before cutting that deficit to 2 in the final minute, a 26-15 run that included nine points from Kristen McCarthy and eight from Shey Peddy. Against Texas A&M the Owls were down 20 with 16 mins left but used a 22-6 run to pull within 4. The Owls trailed Duke by 19 late in the first half, but cut the margin all the way to five in the final minute of the game.

McCARTHY IS HEAD OF THE CLASS
On Nov. 4, it was announced that Kristen McCarthy was one of 30 candidates selected for the Lowe's 2011-12 Women's Basketball Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes notable achievements in four areas- classroom, character, community and competition. The 10 finalists will be announced in late January, at which time a national ballot will be available to fans. To learn more, visit the website at www.seniorclassaward.com.

PEDDY NAMED TO NAISMITH WATCH LIST
Shey Peddy has been named to the 2011-12 Naismith Trophy Women's early-season watch list, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The list includes the 50 top women's college players from 35 schools around the country, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 season.

NOW THE TEAM TO BEAT
After four years of finishing higher than predicted in the A-10, the Owls are finally picked first in a tie with Dayton. Last year Temple was picked third and ended up second, and two years ago was picked fifth and went on to tie for second.
