Volleyball Heads to Fordham and Rhode Island for A-10 Matches This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - The two teams awaiting Temple volleyball on the road this weekend are both opponents that the Owls defeated at home in September- Fordham and Rhode Island. Temple will play at Fordham on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. and will then travel to Rhode Island for a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 21.
Temple is 14-7 overall and currently stands in a tie with Fordham for sixth place in the Atlantic 10 at 4-3. The Fordham Rams are 12-14 overall, while the Rhode Island Rams stand at 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

DIG PINK NEXT FRIDAY...
Next Friday, Oct. 26, Temple will host VCU in its Dig Pink match. The team is looking to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation through its website at: https://www.side-out.org/cb/ous/fundraising_page/2472.
TEMPLE RESURGENCE...
With an overall record of 14-7, the Owls are enjoying their most successful season since 2003. Temple has easily surpassed its total number of wins from last year and the year before, and the Owls have now tied their total number of wins from 2009 with no fewer than seven matches left to play.
TUPUOLA CRACKS ALL-TIME DIGS LIST
In Temple's match against Dayton on Sept. 29, Chelsea Tupuola recorded enough digs to move into 10th place all-time in program history in digs. Tupuola has tallied 1,247 digs in her career, surpassing Leslie Brandt (1989-92) who previously held the 10th spot with 1,179 digs. In ninth place stands Shelly Miller with 1,335 digs.

As a team, the Owls currently rank 10th among all teams in Division I with 17.96 digs per set. Temple also ranks 47th in service aces at 1.45 per set.
AMONG THE NATION'S LEADERS...
Beyond having impressive stats when compared to the rest of the A-10, many Temple players are nationally-ranked in a number of categories, as are the Owls as a team. With 5.44 digs per set, Tupuola currently ranks 20th among all players in NCAA Division I. With 11.12 assists per set, Tiffany Connatser currently ranks 35th in the nation, and with 4.15 kills per set, Elyse Burkert ranks 39th in the nation.
PILING UP THE HONORS...
Over four non-conference tournaments this season, the Owls earned eight All-Tournament awards including two MVP awards. Tupuola was named the MVP of both the Temple Invitational and the Big 5 Tournament. She was also named Best Libero at the Temple Invitational, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Miami (OH) Invitational. Burkert, who earned Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 10, was named to All-Tournament Teams at Miami and South Carolina. Jingyu Zhang was named the Best Spiker at the Temple Invitational, and Connatser was named to the Big 5 All-Tournament Team.
Temple took its first-ever Big 5 Tournament title, and also won its own Temple Invitational. The Owls finished as runners-up at the Miami (OH) Invitational.
ATLANTIC 10 STATS...
As a team, Temple leads the conference in digs (17.96 per set) and service aces (1.45 per set). The Owls rank second with 12.10 assists per set, and also rank second with 12.85 kills per set.
Connatser ranks second in the A-10 in assists (11.12 per set), Gabriella Matautia leads the league in service aces (0.39 per set) and Chelsea Tupuola leads the conference in digs (5.44 per set). Elyse Burkert ranks second in the A-10 in both kills (4.15) and points (4.43 per set).
SCOUTING FORDHAM...
Fordham is 12-14 overall and tied for sixth in the A-10 with Temple at 4-3. The Rams started the season 0-6, but have fared better since, and won three in a row before losing to #18 Dayton as well as Xavier last weekend. Junior outside hitter Lisa Hipp leads the Rams offensively with 3.36 kills per set, and junior libero Maria Rodenberg leads the team on defense with 3.20 digs per set. Rodenberg has also served up 33 aces this season which is the most among A-10 players.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND...
Rhode Island is 6-14 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Rams have lost four in a row including three A-10 matches. Three of the Rams are averaging over 2.00 kills per set, led by junior outside hitter Britta Baarstad with 3.02 kills per set. The head coach of the Rams, Bob Schneck, is in his 31st season with a record of 528-432-2.
ALL-TIME SERIES RECORDS...
All-time, the Rhode Island Rams lead the Owls 28-20. The teams split last season, with each winning on its home court, and Temple won this season's first match 3-0 on Sept. 21.
Temple leads the Fordham Rams 30-6 in the all-time series, but Fordham had won the last four meetings between the teams until the Owls swept the Rams 3-0 on Sept. 22. The Owls lost in both of last year's meetings by scores of 3-1.
