Mahoney Named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Athlete of the Year

11.14.12 | Men's Cross Country

NEW ORLEANS – Redshirt senior Travis Mahoney has been named the Mid-Atlantic Regional Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A native of Old Bridge, N.J., Mahoney won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic title by 10 seconds over the field and is the first from Temple to ever win a regional crown. He also took top honors in winning the Atlantic 10 title by more than five seconds on Oct. 27 at Belmont Plateau, helping the Owls to the program's highest ever finish at a conference championship race.

Returning from a redshirt season, Mahoney returned in style by leading Temple to its highest ever placement at the Paul Short Invitational by having the sixth-fastest time by an individual.

Two weeks later, Mahoney won his first meet of the season at the Leopard Invitational before taking titles at the A-10 Championship and at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Coming in as Temple's fastest runner at every meet he has competed this season, Mahoney became one of three Temple runners all-time to be named to the All-Conference Team.

Already named the A-10 Outstanding Performer of the Year, Mahoney will run for his shot at being named an NCAA All-American when he runs in the National Championship, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky on Nov. 19.

Since the start of 2012, Mahoney, who also ran track while at Temple, has been named the A-10 Outstanding Performer of the Year three times and a First Team NCAA All-American for his performance in the Steeplechase.
