Game Notes vs. Montana (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA - In its first game of the 2012-13 season, Temple women's basketball will play at home against Montana on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The contest will follow the Senior Night volleyball game against La Salle, set for 5:00 p.m. Live stats for the Montana game can be found HERE, and a live webcast will be available to subscribers HERE.

THE OPENING TIP
•Temple had won eight straight season openers from 2002-2009 before having that streak broken with an 84-75 home loss to #7 Ohio State in 2010...The streak began anew with a 70-36 win a year ago in the opener vs. Miami (OH).
•Fifth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza has an overall record of 93-38 and is just seven wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone.
•Senior center Victoria Macaulay was selected to the Preseason Atlantic 10 First Team and Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team.
•The Owls were picked to finish fifth of 16 teams in the 2012-13 A-10 Preseason Poll.
•The Owls will play three non-conference games vs. teams that had RPI's under 50 last year: Rutgers, Nebraska and Georgetown, as well as Michigan State (RPI 62).
•Temple has six freshmen on a roster of 11, making the Owls the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA Division I women's basketball this season.
•Temple finished the 2011-12 season at 23-10 overall and won 20 or more games for a ninth straight season.
•The Owls finished the A-10 season in second place at 13-1, and had won 14 straight before having that streak snapped in a 66-63 loss to Dayton in the A-10 Semifinals.
•Temple's third-round appearance in the postseason (WNIT) was the furthest it has ever advanced in the modern postseason, since top-10 WNIT finishes in the early 1980's.

SCOUTING MONTANA
•Montana went 16-14 in 2011-12 and finished fifth in the Big Sky Conference at 9-7.
•The Lady Griz return all five starters for the first time since the 2007-08 season, led by senior forward Katie Baker and senior guard Kenzie De Boer...Baker was an All-Big Sky First Team selection as a junior.
•Montana Head Coach Robin Selvig coached his 1,000th game at Montana last year, and enters his 35th year tied with Villanova's Harry Perretta as the nation's longest-tenured coach at the same school.

YOUTH IN SPADES
Based on input from Division I women's basketball sports information directors around the country, Temple has been determined to be the second-most inexperienced team in NCAA DI.

The information, collected by UIC's Mike Laninga, took the total number of years of experience on a team and divided it by the number of current players on the roster. Temple's players have an average of 0.727 years of experience to tie for second with SIU-Carbondale. San Jose State came in at number one with an average of 0.44 years of experience per player.

The Owls are not alone in the Atlantic 10, as Dayton and Rhode Island are among others tied for sixth on the list, and Butler is tied for 16th.

TRULY CARDOZA'S TEAM
With this now being her fifth year at Temple, head coach Tonya Cardoza has a team composed entirely of her own recruits for the first time in her career.

PRESEASON HONORS FOR MACAULAY
Temple's lone senior, Victoria Macaulay, was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team as well as to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Defensive Team. The preseason awards and rankings were a result of voting by the league's 16 head coaches. Macaulay led the team with 7.5 rpg last year, and was third with 9.7 ppg.

A TASTE OF WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
Although Temple is not joining the BIG EAST Conference for all sports until next season, the Owls will get a look at what's to come as they are scheduled to play five BIG EAST teams in non-conference play this season.

Temple will host Seton Hall, Rutgers and Syracuse at home, and will travel to both Villanova and Georgetown.

RANKED TEAM ON DECK
The Owls' second game of the season has them traveling to Nebraska, ranked 18/19 in the preseason polls. The Cornhuskers were 24-8 last year and lost to Kansas in the NCAA First Round.

Temple will play three other teams receiving votes in the preseason AP Poll- Rutgers, Georgetown and Michigan State.
