STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Continuing to build on his legacy as a runner at Temple University, redshirt senior Travis Mahoney won the 2012 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Individual title at Penn State, which reserves his spot at the National Championship in Louisville, Kent. on Nov. 19. Mahoney crossed the finish line with a first place time of 30:24, spurring the Owls to a 12th place finish out of 25 teams. Mahoney, who will look to become an NCAA All-American for the second time in a calendar year two weeks from now, is the first Owl to ever win a NCAA Regional and to qualify for the NCAA Championship.
Assistant coach Adam Bray commented on Mahoney's finish saying, “It was a big deal. We wanted to do better this better this race and not having Cullen Davis finish was an unfortunate loss, but we still had a pretty solid performance overall.”
Also finishing in the Top 50 for the men were junior Will Kellar in 27th place with a time of 31:09 and sophomore Matthew Kacyon with a time of 31:25 finishing in 37th place.
Sophomore Tim Collins contributed to Temple's 12th place time by finishing in 121st place with a time of 33:40, while junior Phil Fanz placed 127th coming in at 33:49 and Steven Flynn completing the race in 145th place with a time of 34:49.
Temple will now look toward preparing for its next meet which will be at Van Courtland Park in the Bronx, N.Y. for the IC4A Championship.
