HAVERFORD, Pa. – The second leg of the 2012-13 running season got underway for the Temple men's track and field team on Saturday, as it opened the indoor season at the annual Jack Pyrah Invitational, held at Haverford College. In their opening meet, the Owls turned in many solid performances, highlighted by junior Gabe Pickett's IC4A mark (14.71 m) in the triple jump, which earned him the event title.
Joining Pickett with event titles, sophomore Carlton Stafford set a personal best time in the 300 meter dash to take first place in his event. Stafford's time of 35.69 was nearly four seconds quicker than his prior career-best mark, which stood at 39.29.
Junior Darryl McDuffie had Temple's only other event title on the day, as he claimed first place in the high jump with a mark of 2.00m, putting him just one tenth off from tying 2011 graduate Tim Malloy for the Jack Pyrah Invitational all-time record. Sophomore Kevin Caporiccio had an impressive performance in the high jump, as he took the runner-up spot in the event with his leap of 1.90m.
The triple jump event proved to be Temple's strongest. Behind Pickett's title mark, sophomore Derek Holland placed just behind him with his best mark of 14.29m and Stafford landed in 13.63m to help the Owls claim the top three spots in the event.
In other field events, sophomore Justin Berg racked up a second place finish in the weight throw with his mark of 14.87m, which was ahead of junior Ryan Maccie, who placed sixth with his furthest throw of 13.06m.
Later in the afternoon, Maccie claimed the runner-up position in the shot put with his throw of 12.89m, while freshman Elan Jackson landed a sixth place mark of 12.05m.
“I felt we had a pretty good start to the season,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “There were many solid performances and a lot of our returnees had a better season-opening meet than they have had in previous years.”
With a meet under their belts, the Owls will have more than a month off before its next meet, which will take place Jan. 4 when the team opens the two-day Rutgers Invitational.
