HAVERFORD, Pa.— The start to the 2012-13 indoor season got underway in style for the Temple women's track and field squad. Opening the season at the annual Jack Pyrah Invitational, held at Haverford College, the Owls turned in several impressive performances, including four event titles.
Picking up where she left off last season, sophomore Margo Britton, claimed first place marks in both the weight throw (14.42m) and in the shot put with an ECAC qualifying mark of14.17m.
Competing in her first collegiate meet, freshman Jamila Janneh also hauled in an event title with her first place mark of 1.55m in the high jump, while sophomore Kiersten LaRoche took first place in the long jump with her own first place mark of 5.49m.
Before the day concluded, Janneh placed eighth in the triple jump with her mark of 10.87m. Junior Saudiah Lawrence led the Owls in the event with a mark of 11.10m for third place overall.
Beginning her final season as member of the team, senior Crystal Hercules had the best season-opener that she has had in her four-year career. With a time of 7.88 in the 60 meter dash, Hercules landed herself in second place before setting a new personal record time of 41.98 in the 300 meter dash, which was fast enough to place her third among all participants.
Finishing just ahead of Hercules in the 300 meter dash was freshman Demeshia Davis, who claimed the runner-up spot in the event with her time of 41.72.
Hercules and Davis, along with Kaitlyn McSurdy and Michelle Davis Timothy made up Temple's 4x400 meter relay squad, which turned in a third place time of 4:00.40 to place behind only Villanova's 'A' and 'B' squads.
Davis Timothy and McSurdy both competed in the 500 meter dash earlier in the afternoon. Turning in a solid time of 1:17.60, Davis Timothy claimed third place, while McSurdy crossed the finish line in 1:21.85 for sixth place.
Senior Tonney Smith took part in the 1000 meter rum, which she completed in 3:01.38 to take fourth place overall in the event.
Also competing in her first meet as a member of the Cherry & White, freshman Alexis Kennedy posted an striking mark in the shot put, earning herself the runner-up spot to Britton, with a mark of 11.53m. Senior Jennifer Abercrumbie also took part in the shot put, where she placed fourth (10.59m), which matched her placement in the weight throw (8.93m).
“I felt we had a pretty good start to the season,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “There were many solid performances and a lot of our returnees had a better season-opening meet than they have had in previous years.”
With a meet under their belts, the Owls will have more than a month off before its next meet, which will take place Jan. 4 when the team opens the two-day Rutgers Invitational.
