PHILADELPHIA – Winners of six of their last eight games, the Temple baseball team heads to Hank DeVincent Field on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. midweek tilt with the La Salle Explorers, who are coming off their fifth straight win after defeating Villanova, 5-4 in extra innings at home on Tuesday.
Wednesday's non-conference and Big 5 contest with the Explorers will be the final tune-up for both teams before jumping into their Atlantic 10 Conference schedules. From here, the Owls will make their way out to Missouri for a weekend series with the Saint Louis Billikens, while the Explorers head to the nation's capital to battle the George Washington Colonials.
La Salle, who has won six of its last seven games, is undefeated at home with a 5-0 record this season.
A week ago, the Explorers and Owls met on Temple territory up at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler, where the Owls surged back from 8-0 third inning deficit to crawl back within a run going into the eighth inning. An insurance home run by La Salle George Smith, Jr. in the ninth was preserved by Pat Christensen's save.
For the Owls, redshirt freshman Connor Reilly comes into the ballgame atop of the leaderboard in hitting. A .333 batting average in 58 plate appearances has been a key component in Temple's offense. Reilly, a late addition to the team and quarterback on the school's football team, also leads the Owls with two home runs.
Matt Elko, a redshirt junior first baseman and utility player, is coming off a very productive week. Elko broke out with eight hits, including two doubles and a triple, while setting team-highs for the week with six runs scored and seven runs batted in. The Parsippany, N.J. native built a .381 batting average and a .571 on base percentage through the five games he played, helping Temple to three wins in that span.
Freshman Adam Dian will make his first collegiate start this afternoon at La Salle, where he'll be opposed by rookie right hander Mark Williams.
Dian sports a 2.84 earned run average with a record of 1-0 through seven of his opportunities where he has amassed 12.2 innings of work, over which he struck out 12 hitters while allowing six hits and four runs. The right hander from Gibsonia, Pa is holding opposing hitters to a .154 batting average.
Williams is starting the third game of his career in the Blue and Gold. So far, Williams owns a 1-0 record with an ERA of 4.91 through 11.0 innings and four appearances.
