Temple Fencing Begins National Championship Quest

COLUMBIUS. Ohio - The 2012 NCAA Championships for men and women's fencing open on Thursday at Ohio State at the French Field House and St. John Arena. Temple has four women fencers representing its program, as seniors Alyssa Lomuscio and Kamali Thompson return to nationals along with junior Mikayla Varadi and first-time national qualifier junior Jill Bratton.
Thompson is closing out her career in the Cherry and White this weekend with her fourth trip to the NCAA Championships to compete in sabre. Her classmate, Lomuscio, is making her third trip to fhe field of 72 and looking to defend her All-American status as a foilist, which she was tabbed with last season.
Varadi, who is also foilist, is also making her third appearance to nationals.
Bratton makes her debut on the national stage, where she will take part in epee. Knowing that she will be returning to the squad next year as a senior, Bratton is looking forward to using this expereicne to make her a better leader next season.

The women's competition begins at 10 a.m. Thursday inside French Field House. Results will be posted on Owlsports.com following the conclusion of each day and live stats will be available at http://www.prisedefer.com/NCAA.
ESPN3.com will broadcast each weapon's semifinals and championship bouts live here. ESPN will also air a one-hour highlights special on ESPN3.com following the conclusion of the event. Women's semifinal and gold medal bouts are set to begin at 1:45 p.m. Friday and the men's Final Four will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday.
