Early lead for the Owls doesn't hold; late comeback falls short
Box Score (PDF)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite a promising start, the Temple lacrosse team ultimately suffered its first loss of the season at Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon, losing 19-16. The Owls (5-1) got five goals from Stephany Parcell, four from Stephanie Markunas and three from Keelin Hood, but their early 7-0 lead evaporated as the Dolphins (4-1) found their stride.
Tess Bishop, who made 12 saves for Temple, made some impressive ones on Jackonville free position attempts early in the game to help Temple dominate for the first most of the first half. Markunas took advantage of the second of those saves, getting the ball on the clear attempt and running all the way down the field to score. She added a second goal just over a minute later on a free position shot, and completed the hat trick with 13:45 left in the first half on an unassisted score.
The lead became 7-0 after a Hood's second goal of the game at 12:55, and both teams were then scoreless for over six minutes. It was Jacksonville that struck next as the Dolphins caught fire themselves, rattling off six goals before halftime while the Owls scored just one more when Markunas fed Hood in front of the cage. At the break, Temple was up by just two, 8-6.
The teams traded goals early in the second half, allowing Temple to hold onto its slim lead until the Dolphins tied the game for the first time at 11-11. That tie followed a 3-0 run for Jacksonville, which turned into a 6-0 run as the Dolphins took a 14-11 lead with 11:57 remaining.
After a lone goal by Markunas, her fourth of the contest, Jacksonville scored five of the next six goals to put the game out of reach. Parcell scored twice as did Swavola as part of a 3-0 closing run for the Owls, but the final margin of 19-16 was as close as they could get.
Swavola finished with two goals and two assists while Syphard and Kelsey Zenuk scored one goal apiece.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to face #5 Florida in the final game of a four-game road swing.
