BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sixth-year head coach Aaron Murphy leads the Temple women's gymnastics squad to the 2012 USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Championships, which will get underway Thursday at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.
Temple will compete against Penn, Bridgeport and Seattle Pacific in the night session on Thursday, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. If the Owls place as one of the top four teams through the two sessions, they will move on to the team finals on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The individual event finals will take place Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Owls will be competing for the USAG title after taking third place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship back on March 24.
Fifth-year gymnast Katie Canning will take to the apparatuses one final time during this competition. Canning broke the school's all-time all around record at the conference championships with her first place score of 39.200 to become Temple's first gymnast ever to win the all around at the ECAC Championships. On the year, the Billerica, Mass. native has won the all-around at five events this season.
Canning was named first team All-ECAC, while senior Kaity Watson earned a spot on the second team.
Watson has been essential down the stretch since getting back in the lineup. Watson had an outstanding performance for the Owls on bars at the ECAC championships—a week after posting her career-best score on the apparatus at William & Mary.
Seniors Corrine Williams and Alexandra Uscatu have been solid in the performances and through their leadership all season long.
Williams, another all-around competitor for the Owls, has been consistent in just about every event she has performed in this season. Her most impressive scores this season occurred on vault and floor, which she earned a 9.800 and a 9.900, respectively
Uscatu has participated a s vault specialist this season, helping the unit to a third place ranking in the ECAC this season and the program's highest score at an event.
Murphy has a strong core of underclassmen to back his seniors as well. Over the course of the year, junior Jean Alban and sophomore Sylvie Borchel have bolstered the Owls' scores on beam.
Sophomore Jasmine Johnson has provided much support in the vault lineup, while Heather Zaniewski has backed Temple on vault, bars and beam over the course of the season.
Freshman Natali Ruzich has made an impact early in her Cherry & White career, providing stellar performances on vault and bars.
