RICHMOND, Va. - With seven goals apiece from Caitlin Fifield and Sam Stevensen, Richmond (8-6, 4-1) was able to hold off Temple lacrosse by a score of 20-16 on Sunday afternoon. The Owls (8-7, 2-3) made a comeback attempt in the high-scoring affair after being down as many as nine, but could get no closer than three.

Stephany Parcell led Temple with four goals, while three other players also notched hat tricks in the game. Karly Cohen, Missy Schweitzer and Charlotte Swavola each scored three goals apiece and Stephanie Markunas added two.

After Richmond's Sam Stevenson scored in the first 20 seconds of the game, Temple answered quickly and soon led the Spiders 3-1. Markunas got her first goal within the first minute and a half of play to tie the score at 1-1. Schweitzer and Cohen then scored within 40 seconds of each other for the two-goal advantage.

The lead did not last as Richmond exploded for a 5-0 run to lead 6-3 with 17:28 left in the first half. Cohen got her second goal to stop the run, but the Spiders' Fifield then scored back-to-back goals for an 8-4 lead.

The scoring was nearly even for the remainder of the first half, but Temple got one point closer with four goals to Richmond's three, including two in the final 1:13 from Swavola that took Temple from a five-goal deficit to just a three-goal deficit by halftime, 11-8. While the two teams were nearly even in shots for the first half (18 for Richmond and 17 for Temple), the Spiders' Victoria Roebuck made eight saves to keep the Owls at a disadvantage.

The second half saw things take a bad turn for the Owls, as Richmond scored six straight goals in the first 11 minutes, nearly putting Temple behind by double digits.

Down 17-8 the Owls finally found their offense again and made a comeback attempt with five straight goals over the next six minutes thanks to gaining every single draw control during that stretch. Parcell scored the first and fourth goals of the 5-0 run, while Molly Seefried, Swavola and Schweitzer also scored. The final goal by Schweitzer put Temple within four, 17-13 with 13:20 remaining.

Stevenson scored her seventh goal for Richmond to stop the run, but Parcell answered to keep the margin at four. The Spiders then dramatically slowed the pace of the game on their next possession, eating up valuable time for the Owls who did not get the ball back until after a save by Megan Clothier with 5:29 remaining.

Temple then made quick work of scoring another goal as the Owls cleared the ball and made their way down to Richmond's end where Parcell scored her fourth goal of the game. Up by just three, 18-15 with 4:57 remaining, Richmond called timeout and then proceeded to earn the next draw control and took the clock down to 3:11 before Mary Flowers had an open shot and put one past Clothier.

Markunas earned yet another draw for Temple, and after Swavola's free position shot was saved by Roebuck, the Owls quickly got another attempt and Cohen notched her fourth goal of the game to keep Temple's hopes alive at 19-16.

It was unfortunately as close as the Owls would get, with Richmond scoring the final and only goal of the last three minutes in the final six seconds of play.

Temple will return home for its final two regular season games, needing to get back on the winning track if the Owls are to earn a spot in the upcoming A-10 Tournament. First up is Saint Joseph's on Friday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m. as Temple celebrates Friends of Jaclyn Week with its adopted sister, Lily Adkins, and her family.
