AMBLER – Temple resumes Liberty Bell Classic play on Tuesday when it welcomes the Lehigh Mountain Hawks to Skip Wilson Field for a consolation game of the tournament. Freshman right-hander Eric Peterson will toe the rubber for the second time in his career for the Owls where he will be opposed by Lehigh sophomore righty Colin Gotzon. The Owls (12-15) are coming off their first series win of the season after defeating the Monmouth Hawks in both games of a home-home weekend series.
Temple has won nine of its last 13 non-conference games coming into its affair with Lehigh.
In the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic, Temple fell to the Saint Joseph's Hawks by a score of 4-1 at Skip Wilson Field last Tuesday afternoon. In that game, Peterson made his first collegiate start on the mound and pitched effective for the Owls, going 6.0 innings of work, in which he only surrendered an unearned run. The Bear, Delaware native allowed four hits, two walks and struck out three in his effort.
Senior center fielder Jabair Khan raised his batting average 36 points by hitting .500 (5-for-10) through three games last week out of the seven spot in first-year head coach Ryan Wheeler's batting order. The West Chester, Pa. native led the Owls with 11 total bases, in which all five of his hits were for extra bases. Khan had four doubles and a triple through games against St. Joe's and Monmouth. Khan led the team with three runs scored and two multi-hit games.
Lehigh (8-19-1) visits the Owls for the Liberty Bell Classic matchup due to dropping its first round contest to Delaware by a count of 5-0 last week.
Over the weekend, the Mountain Hawks defeated Lafayette in the series opener on Friday to win their second straight game, but fell Saturday and Sunday to the Leopards.
The lone tie on Lehigh's record occurred back on March 14 at Delaware State when an 11-11 game was called in the 11th inning due to darkness.
Senior Ryan Gajdos is the only Leopard to have played in all 28 games this season. In his time, he has built a .286 batting average and has 11 runs batted in. Classmate Brendan McGaheran is the only Leopard to have started in at least 27 games. McGaheran is hitting .287 in 100 at bats and leads the team with 29 hits and two home runs.
Temple leads the all-time series 28-16-1. In the last meeting back on April 6, 2010 in a Liberty Bell Classic first round game, the Owls fell at Skip Wilson Field by a slim count of 13-12.
