Owls Place Third At A-10 Championships; Mahoney Named Outstanding Performer of the Year

Mahoney, Pickett and 4x400 meter relay squad earn conference event titles

AMHERST, Mass. –In the event finals of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, senior Travis Mahoney was named the conference's Most Outstanding Performer of the Year, as the Owls' men's squad placed third overall in the 14-school meet at the UMass Track & Field Complex. Mahoney, sophomore Gabe Pickett and the 4x400 meter relay squad all placed as conference champions in their respective events.
With a finish time of 14:31.71 in the 5000 meter run, Mahoney adds the event championship to his steeplechase title, which he won on Saturday. The Old Bridge, Pa. native also set a new personal best time in the 1500 meter run with a finish time of 3:47.80 to earn second place.
Pickett is the 2012 A-10 outdoor champion in the triple jump, as he landed an average mark of 15.22 meters. Derek Holland placed behind him with an outstanding new personal best mark of 15.15 meters.
Temple has demonstrated its dominance in the 4x400 meter event over the years and continued on Sunday. The Owls, who set the conference's all-time record in the event in 1998, were paced to a 2012 championship in the event by Damian Myers, Lionel Wilson, Lou Parisi and Alan Harding with a combined time of 3:12.34.
Harding and Wilson were featured in the 400 meter dash, where they had impressive results, placing second and third, respectively. Harding's time of 47.66 gave him a new personal best time in the event.
Parisi represented the Owls in the 800 meter run and completed with a solid time of 1:50.96 to set a new personal best, while earning points for his team with a third place ranking. Sophomore Will Kellar rand for the Owls in the event, as well, and crossed the finish line less than two second after Parisi for a seventh place earning.
Myers and sophomore Alex McGee took part in the 200 meter dash, where they placed fifth and eighth, respectively. Myers crossed the finish line in 21.77 while McGee completed the hurdle in 22.07.
In the 4x100 relay, Josh McFrazier, Dylan Pensyl, McGee and Myers combined to be the fifth-fastest group with their combined time of 42.10.
McFrazier went on to have a solid post time in the 110 meter high hurdles, having a third place finish of 14.32, while McGee's time of 11.04 in the 100 meter dash earned him a ninth place rank.
In the field events, sophomore Ryan Maccie earned eighth place in the shot put with a mark of 13.39 meters. Later in the day, he took ninth place mark in the discus throw with a personal best mark of 42.11, which was outdone by senior Brian Littlepage, who placed fifth with his throw of 47.20 meters.
The Owls' individuals now look to work their way into the NCAA Championships, as all qualifiers for next weekend's IC4A Championships head to Princeton to compete for their chance to represent Temple in front of a national field.
