Owls earn 11-0 mercy rule victory in game one; pick up 5-1 win in nightcap
AMBLER, Pa. – Playing in its final game at Ambler Field in 2012, the Temple softball team closed out the home season with a bang, sweeping Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure in a Sunday doubleheader. The Owls won the opener in five innings, 11-0, before getting a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
Before the game, seven Temple seniors were honored for their contributions to the program. Capri Catalano, Rachel Knable, Meaghan Marley, Alysse Pujol, Melissa Robbins, Samantha Schoell and Christina Sykora each donned the home uniform for the final time today.
The Cherry and White (27-20, 12-6 A10) scored early and often in the opening game, staking pitcher Brooklin White to a 3-0 lead after just the first inning. Temple went on to score three more in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth on the way to the mercy-run rule game.
While her offense was doing its job, White (14-10) was also impressive on the mound, giving up just one hit in 5.0 innings of work while striking out nine and walking two for her third shutout of the year. Jen Sansano (11-12) took the loss, lasting just 2.2 innings, giving up nine hits and 10 runs, walking three and striking out one.
Sarah Prezioso was 3-for-3 in the game with a double and four RBI. Stephanie Pasquale also had multiple hits with a 2-for-3 game and two RBI.
In game two, Temple's pitching was again a big part of the story, this time with Catalano on the mound. The senior improved to 8-7 on the year with a complete-game three-hit performance that included a season-high 13 strikeouts.
TU again jumped out to a big 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four in the second. Ali Robinson doubled to leadoff the first, moved to third on Schoell's ground out, and scored on a passed ball to make it a 1-0 game, in the process setting Temple's single-season record for individual runs scored with 45 this year.
In the second, a Kayla Cook single drove in one run before Sykora hit a three-run shot over the right centerfield fence to build the 5-0 advantage.
Bonnies' pitcher Diana Phalon (6-12) settled in after that, allowing just two hits the rest of the way. The visitors even got one back on a solo homerun from Brooke Frey in the sixth, but the damage had been done early and Catalano struck out the side in the seventh to get the win.
Sykora led the way offensively with a 1-for-3 performance with three RBI.
Temple has secured the third seed at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Saint Louis, Mo., this week. The Owls will face #6 Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. Central Time on Wednesday, May 9, in their first game of the double elimination event.
