Elyse Burkert and Chelsea Tupuola earn All-Tournament Team honors

(vs. Indiana State) l Box Score (vs. Miami)

OXFORD, Ohio - Temple volleyball split matches on the final day of the Miami (OH) Invitational to finish at 2-1 overall and place second behind host Miami. Elyse Burkert and Chelsea Tupuola earned All-Tournament Team honors, marking the second such honor for both players so far this season. The Owls (6-4) defeated Indiana State, 3-1, before falling by the same score to Miami in the final match.

Burkert was strong all tournament long, and nearly recorded three double-doubles in three matches. She got a double-double with 19 kills and 11 digs in the win over Indiana State (1-8), and then notched a match-high 23 kills along with nine digs vs. Miami (4-6).

Tupuola had an impressive outing in the final match with a match-best 34 digs, after recording a match-best 20 digs earlier in the day.

The Owls won the Indiana State match by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-15. They lost to Miami by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18.

Against Indiana State, Tiffany Connatser tallied 49 assists, Gabriella Matautia knocked down 13 kills and Jingyu Zhang recorded 12 kills. Matautia had another 12 kills vs. Miami, while both Connatser and Zhang reached double figures in digs.

Temple let a five-point lead slip away in the first set against Indiana State as the Sycamores tied the score at 20-20, but it was all Owls from there. Matuatia served up back-to-back aces to close out the set. The Owls were within two, 21-19 in the second set, but were plagued by errors in the final points as Indiana State was able to even the match at one set apiece.

The Owls got back on track in the third and fourth sets, winning by wide margins and making strong runs toward the end of both sets.

Blocking was the major factor in Temple's loss to Miami, as the Redhawks recorded 14 blocks to Temple's six.

Temple had a set point at 24-23 in the first set, but Miami's Meg Riley knocked down a kill and later hit the set-winning kill for the Redhawks as well. She finished with 20 kills in the match.

In the second set, the Owls had a 24-20 lead and showed toughness in staying in the set as Miami fought off three set points before Matautia came up with a big kill to even the match at 1-1. The third set was another nail-biter with 12 total ties, but after Miami got a 23-22 lead the Redhawks put away the final two points. Miami kept the momentum in the fourth set as Temple stayed in it but trailed by a few points throughout.

The Owls will play their first home match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 12 against NJIT at 6:00 p.m.
