ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On Saturday afternoon, the Temple men's track and field squad picked up a second place finish at the U.S. Navy Academy, falling only to host Navy and beating out Delaware State. The Owls, who totaled 94 points as a team, were led by first place finishes by sophomore Cullen Davis, freshman Steve Flynn and junior Gabe Pickett at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
In the 1000 meter run, Davis claimed the event title with his finish time of 2:29.67, while Flynn was the first to cross the finish line in the 1 mile run with his time of 4:20.33, which was just ahead of teammate Matt Kacyon in second place, who ran the event in 4:20.47.
Taking part in the field events, Pickett landed a first place marking of 14.37 meters in the triple jump.
The Owls were led to the runner-up spot in the day's events with season-bests from Nathan Emanuel in the 800 meter run (2:02.25) and freshman Owen Glatts (9:13.65) and junior Phil Fanz (9:19.11), both in the 3000 meter run. Sophomore Justin Berg also set a new season-best marking in the weight throw with his toss that went 15.01 meters.
Despite taking third place in the 4x400 meter relay, Temple's 'A' squad, which was led by Damian Myers, Lionel Wilson, Alex McGee and Carlton Stafford, still managed to come away with its fastest time of the year in the event, finishing in 3:24.11. Also showing improvement, the 4x800 meter relay squad, comprised of Flynn, Kacyon, William Montgomery and Emanuel, also combined for their fastest finish time of the year (8:24.60).
Sophomore Darryl McDuffie took part in the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes, where he was Temple's fastest competitor in both events. McDuffie rushed for a sixth-best time in the 60 meter dash (7.22), while he took a seventh place ranking in the 200 meter edition with his time of 22.95.
Myers' fourth place ranking in the 400 meter dash was the highest for Temple, as his time of 50.10 was quicker than Wilson (50.24) and McGee (52.54).
Taking part in the 50 meter run, Montgomery (1:08.19), Blair Alston (1:08.97 and Alex Izegbu (1:09.88) came across the finish line in the order of fourth, fifth and sixth.
Izegbu and Alston also competed in the 60 meter hurdles. Earning third place was Izegbu with a time of 8.63 and Alston, who placed fifth, clocking in at 8.93.
Making his debut, freshman Thomas Sternberg placed fourth in the pole vault competition with his mark of 4.05 meters.
Temple also got solid performances in the shot put from Elan Jackson, who placed fifth in the competition with a mark of 11.51, while Derek Holland landed a third place triple jump spitting of 13.66 meters and Jamal Williams claimed Temple's best marking with a fourth place overall spotting of 6.48 meters in the long jump.
From here, the Owls will prepare for highly touted national competition when it heads to the Penn State National Open next weekend (Jan. 25-26).
