STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Against some of the nation's most competitive track and field athletes, Temple's women's squad put up its most impressive performances of the indoor season in day two of the Penn State National Invitational on Saturday. Just has she has done many times during her young career as a Temple Owl, sophomore Margo Britton broke a school record in a throw event.
Britton, the 2012 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, broke the program's record for distance in the shot put—a record that she set last season—with a her mark of 15.29m. Not only did her mark earn her the title in the event on Saturday, she also surpassed ECAC qualifying standards.
“This was a great meet for us,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “Everyone stepped up to their highest level and this was one of the best showings we have had; especially at this particular meet where there are so many good athletes. This meet showed us how good we can be when we practice hard. The ladies continued to show progress and proved to be getting better and better.”
Several other Owls had outstanding performances on this day, as the 4x400 meter relay squad—made up of: Ambrosia Iwugo, Michelle Davis Timothy, Tessa West and Sheina Roberts—set the program's best finish time in nearly five years with combined time of 3:44.76, which earned the team second place. The Owls were runner-ups to Coppin State, who completed the event just milliseconds quicker (3:44.29).
Iwugo went on to have a big day for herself in addition to helping her relay mates to an impressive finish. In the 400 meter dash, Iwugo claimed the quickest time, helping her capture the event title with her ECAC qualifying time of 55.65.
Davis Timothy also had a strong performance 400 meter dash, where she placed 11th with a time of 57.28, which set a new personal best, but just missed ECAC qualifying standards.
Roberts nearly had Temple's third event title, as she placed second in the 500 meter dash with her personal best time of 1:14.45, which was fast enough to reserve her a spot at the ECAC Championships, while freshman Demisha Davis recorded her season-best in the 200 meter dash with her time of 25.18.
Taking part in the one mile run, junior Anna Pavone finished seconds short of surpassing her personal best time. Her time of 4:59.30 was fast enough to earn her third place in the event, ahead of sophomore Jenna Dubrow, who claimed 11th place with her season-best time at 5:02.74.
After Friday's results were released, it was later determined that the distance medley squad set a new school record with its time of 11:56.75.
Sophomore Kiersten LaRoche placed just short of the school record for mark in the high jump with her 1.68 meters. Despite missing, LaRoche still managed to set a personal record and notch a spot at ECAC's for the event, as did senior Jade Wilson with her time of 8.80 in the 60 meter hurdles.
Britton set a new personal best in the weight throw on Friday with her mark of 16.63 meters, which improved her ECAC qualifying mark.
Temple will use this week to get ready for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the 168th St. Armory.
