NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – A month-long hiatus since running its first indoor meet of the season, Temple Track and Field got back to work, as it competed at the Rutgers Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers Bubble. In what was a weekend filled with solid performances from the team as a whole against the host Scarlet Knights and Fordham, senior Tessa West and Sheina Roberts turned in personal best times in the 500 meter dash and met ECAC qualifications, going second and third respectively in the event. Joining those two with ECAC qualifying marks was junior Ambrosia Iwugo, who captured third place in the 200 meter dash with her time of 24.95.
“This was a very good meet for us,” head coach Eric Mobley said. “We had solid performances from everyone and I was satisfied with everyone's effort. This was a great way to return from the holiday break and now that we have this meet under us now, we're ready get back to work and show how well we can perform.”
Temple had several of its competitors claim event titles in the two-day meet. Junior Anna Pavone ran the one mile run in a first place time with a personal best speed of 5:08.94. Sophomore Margo Britton maintained her consistency in the throw events, as she topped all competitors in both the shot put and in the weight throw, where she notched a new personal best mark of 15.73 meters. Coming off her first place landing in the high jump at last month's Jack Pyrah Invitational, freshman Jamila Janneh took the triple jump title Friday with her mark of 11.39 meters.
Later in the afternoon, Janneh tied her teammate Kiersten LaRoche for second place in the high jump with an identical mark of 1.60. LaRoche's performance in that event came after her fourth place ranking in the 60 meter hurdles, which sat her behind senior Jade Wilson, who tied Rutgers' Adrienne Williams for second place.
In the relay events, the Owls gathered two more event victories. Hollis Coleman, Iwugo, Crystal Hercules and Michelle Davis Timothy combined for a time of 3:56.68 in the 4x400 meter relay to take first place. Roberts, West, Kaitlyn McSurdy and Jade Wilson also posted a winning time, as they nabbed the top spot in the 4x800 meter relay.
Saturday's track events got off to a solid start for the Owls. Junior Isatta Kenneh, who was just short of hitting the ECAC qualifying mark, posted a quick time of 7.69 for second place in the 60 meter dash. Placing just behind her in third place with a new personal best time of 7.77 was Iwugo.
Next up for the Owls, it will be a meet at the 168th St. Armory for the Gotham Cup on Jan. 11.
