PHILADELPHIA - Junior Tiki Kastor successfully defended her sabre title at the 34th Annual Temple Fencing Open, taking first place among nearly 80 competitors for a second year in a row. The Owls had six fencers finish in the top eight among the three weapons, including Kastor and senior Chantal Montrose who took third place in epee.

The individual collegiate fencing meet, being held Saturday and Sunday (men's) on Temple's main campus in McGonigle Hall, is the largest of its kind. Nearly 600 fencers from over 30 colleges and universities are competing.

In sabre, two of Kastor's teammates joined her in the final eight. Senior Andrea Haley placed third, and sophomore Petra Khan placed sixth.

"Tiki did a fantastic job winning sabre for a second year in a row," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke, now in her 42nd season. "Unfortunately she had to beat her teammate Andrea to reach the gold-medal round, but it was a great result for Andrea too. Petra was injured last year as a freshman and couldn't compete at this meet, so for all three of them to reach the finals was fabulous.

"For Chantal as a senior, this is her best result which is great for her," said Franke. "Our freshmen did well also. Overall I'm very pleased with how the girls did for their first tournament. We now see some things we need to work on. I know we can do better and we will do better, and that's what the season is all about."

Senior Epiphany Georges represented foil in the finals, and finished seventh overall. Freshman Rachael Clark had an impressive first collegiate outing, joining Montrose on the podium for epee by finishing sixth.

Fencers from Penn State University took first place in both foil and epee.

Sophomore Fatima Largaespada, freshman Miranda Litzinger and sophomore Demi Antipas finished 10th, 11th and 12th in foil, respectively. Freshman Noelle Baptiste turned in a 12th place finish in epee, while senior Kimberly Howell and freshman Alexandra Keft placed 18th and 19th, respectively.

Senior Tasia Ford and junior Lauren Rangel-Friedman both narrowly missed the finals in sabre, finishing 10th and 12th. Freshman Victoria Suber also turned in a strong debut performance, placing 14th in sabre.
