PHILADELPHIA
– The Temple Owls suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday evening at McGonigle Hall with a 74-70 decision to No. 21/18 Michigan State (5-1).

But the score did not indicate how tough the Owls played.

"This is one we let slip away," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza.  "We played pretty good basketball. Down the stretch when we needed a big play or a big stop, we didn't get it.  Hats off to Michigan State."

In the first half, Temple jumped out to a seven-point lead, 11-4.  Michigan State bounced back but never led by more than one point.  Freshman point guard Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) led the Owls with 13 points in the first stanza,  The Owls held a four-point edge at intermission, 32-28.

"In the first half, we disrupted them," Cardoza said.

In the second half, TU went up by seven, 35-28, but MSU came roaring back.  Neither team led by more than two buckets until the Spartans claimed their biggest lead, 72-66, with 37 seconds to go.

Fitzgerald paced the Owls with a career-high 24 points, including 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) followed with 14 points, while sophomore Erica Covile (Canton, Mich.) added 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

"I think we did o.k. as a team, but we didn't win," Fitzgerald said.

"We just have to be smarter," Cardoza added. "We didn't make the adjustments. We had freshman post players step up. That's promising."

Tori Jankoska led the Spartans with a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  Annalise Pickrel added 18 points.

Overall, Michigan State out-rebounded Temple, 42-30. The Owls shot 42 percent from the floor (25-60) compared to the Spartans' 39 percent (21-54).  MSU went to the free throw line 36 times, converting 29 attempts.

Temple continues its four-game homestand with Oakland on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.  For season ticket information, call 215-204-8499.
