STORRS, Conn. - Top-seeded and #7 Connecticut proved too much for fourth-seeded and #19 Temple field hockey for a second week in a row, as the Owls suffered a 3-0 loss to the Huskies in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Temple goalkeeper Lizzy Millen finished with five saves in the contest, while UConn's Sarah Mansfield made three.
"We're very proud of our team," said Temple head coach Amanda Janney. "They fought hard and we just weren't able to take advantage of our opportunities. Our seniors played great today and they have been amazing leaders all year. It has been great to be in the BIG EAST this year. The competition level is extremely high, and I'm proud we competed as well as we did in our first year in the BIG EAST."
UConn's Anne Jeute scored both of the game's first-half goals. Seven minutes in, she took a long backhanded shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the cage to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
In the 11th minute, the Owls got a big defensive save from Taylor Shronk to stay just a goal down.
With 13 minutes left in the first half, Jeute tipped in a shot by teammate Roisin Upton to give UConn a 2-0 lead that stood through halftime. Temple earned two penalty corners with Molly Doyle getting a clean shot off on each, but the first was blocked and the second was saved by Mansfield.
Alyssa Delp had a strong shot early in the second half that was saved by Mansfield, and Millen made a big save for Temple six minutes into the half.
On the Owls' third corner of the game with 15 minutes left, Doyle had yet another strong shot that was turned away by Mansfield.
With 8:37 remaining, Chloe Hunnable scored on a fast break with a cross pass from Marie Elena Bolles to make it 3-0 UConn.
