Temple Faces #23 Syracuse on Monday Night at Carrier Dome

Temple continues its two-game road trip with a visit to No. 23 Syracuse for a 7 p.m. game on Monday, Dec. 16 at the Carrier Dome.
The Owls return home to host Howard on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
The Owls, under sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza, stand 5-2 on the season after a 61-52 win at Montana.
After seven games, four Owl starters are averaging double-figure scoring. Freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) is the Owls' leading scorer with 14.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) follows with 12.3 ppg and 6.9 rpg. Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) adds 11.7 points and 5.1 apg. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) also adds 11.6 ppg and 8.3 rpg.
SCOUTING SYRACUSE
The No. 23 Orange, under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Quentin Hillaman, stand 8-1 on the season after a 97-91 loss at No. 25 Iowa on Dec. 5. Syracuse had an 11-day break before hosting Temple.
Sophomore Brittney Sykes is the Orange's top scorer with 19.8 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Sophomore Brianna Butler follows with 16.6 ppg and 3.1 rpg, while senior Shakeya Leary is the top rebounder with 9.2 rpg.
SERIES VS. ORANGE
Temple and Syracuse have met three times since 1981. The Orange hold a 2-1 series edge.
In the team's first meeting on Jan. 10, 1981, Temple lost to Syracuse, 75-74, in the championship game of the McGill-Marlett Tournament in Montreal, Can.
In the WNIT Sweet 16 in 2012, Temple ended the season with a 82-68 loss. The Owls made a season-high nine three-pointers. Shey Peddy scored 20 points and hit four treys in her final game for the Owls. Kristen McCarthy ended her Temple career with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while BJ Williams dished a team-high six assists in her final game.
Last December, the teams met in regular-season play with TU pulling out a 74-67 win at McGonigle Hall. After trailing by double digits at halftime, Temple scored an impressive 49 points in the second half to hand Syracuse its first loss of the season. Victoria Macaulay scored 20 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Rateska Brown hit 4-of-8 three-pointers and finished with a career-high 19 points. Tyonna Williams notched the first double-double of her career with 14 points and a career-high 11 assists.
HAVE SUITCASE, WILL TRAVEL
Temple embarked on its longest trip of the season on Friday, Dec. 13, heading 2,331 miles west to Montana. TU then flew directly to Syracuse for a Dec. 16 contest. The Owls, which will rely on their wings to get them back home, will cover 4,836 total miles on the trip.
TU will travel to Texas in February for American Athletic Conference play, meeting SMU and Houston. That trip, however, will only cover 3,275 miles roundtrip.
VS. RANKED FOES
Syracuse is the second nationally ranked team the Owls have faced so far this season. Temple dropped a 74-70 decision to No. 21/18 Michigan State on Nov. 26.
Since 1976, Temple has upset 12 teams ranked in the Top 25. The Owls' last upset came against No. 13 Xavier on Feb. 25, 2009, with a 74-65 victory at the Liacouras Center. TU?has faced the nation's No. 1 team six times and is still looking for an upset.
Temple has been nationally ranked twice in its history. Under head coach Dawn Staley, the Owls earned their first national ranking during the 2004-05 season and were ranked for eight weeks, reaching as high as No. 15 in both polls. The following season (2005-06), TU was ranked the entire season, reaching as high as No. 16.
