Men's T&F Opens A-10 Indoor Championships At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I.—On Saturday, Temple Men's Track & Field opened competition at the Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Championships, held at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse. Through Day 1, the Owls currently stand in 11th place out of 16.
 
Sophomore Justin Berg had one of the more dominant performances put on by a Temple Owl, as he placed first in his heat and eighth overall earning one point for the team with a throw of 16.10m. Freshman Thomas Sternberg placed 11th in the pole vault (4.05m).
 
Rounding out the field events was the long jump in which junior Gabe Pickett had a personal best jump of 6.53m to land him a ninth place overall finish. Junior Carlton Stafford finished second in his heat and 10th overall (6.52), while freshman Jamal Williams' effort put him in 13th place (6.36).
 
In the 400m dash, Stafford hustled and was the first to cross the finish line in his heat in the fourth-fastest time overall (50.54) to earn himself a new personal best time.
 
In the same event senior Damian Myers finished eighth (50.67)  and sophomore Lionel Wilson place 14th (51.53).
 
Moving to the 60m hurdles, freshmen Alex Izegbu and Blair Alston had a back-to-back finishes, placing 14th and 15th, respectively. Izegbu ran a time of 8.87 while Alston followed him at 9.02.
 
Sophomore Darryl McDuffie led the Owls in the 60m dash and finished 13th overall (7.15), which was quicker than junior Gabe Pickett (7.19) and junior Tyreece Clayton (7.20). Both Pickett and Clayton ran personal bests.
 
Competing in his second event of the day, Myers placed seventh (22.39) in the 200m dash, beating out his teammate sophomore Lionel Wilson (23.19).
 
In the 500m dash sophomore William Montgomery placed 17th with a personal best time of 1:08.58, ahead of Alston, who was right on his tail 18th place with a time of 1:10.07.
 
Finishing the opening day of events for the men was the distance medley relay team, comprised of freshmen Steven Flynn Alston and Nathan Emanuel, along with sophomore Cullen Davis. The four TU runners combined for a ninth place finish (10:20.22) in the event.
 
Temple will look to improve upon its overall standings in the second and final day of competition at the A-10 Championships on Sunday, while several of its competitors will look to take conference titles in their respective events.
