Highlights

PHILADELPHIA—On Saturday, the No. 9 Temple Fencing team hosted its last home meet of the season, facing four of the top fencing teams in the country; No. 2 Princeton, No. 5 Penn State, No. 6 St. John's and No. 11 Duke. The day began on a bittersweet note when seniors Jill Bratton and Mikayla Varadi were recognized by Athletic Director Bill Bradshaw, Senior Associate Athletic Director Kristen Foley and the coaches in what was their final home meet of their college careers.

All in all, it was a successful end to the regular fencing season for the Owls.  Temple was led by Bratton, who went 8-4 on the day, Chantal Montrose (7-5), Fatima Largaespada (5-3) as well as Epiphany Georges who finished the day 9-3.

The Owls started off the day extremely strong, beating Duke for the second time this season. With an exceptional performance by the foil squad who finished 8-1, the Owls were able to dominate Duke with an impressive 17-10 win.

Junior Epiphany Georges (3-0) was undefeated in the meet as was senior Mikayla Varadi (2-0), sophomore Tiki Kastor (2-0) and freshman Fatima Largaespada (2-0).  Against a very strong Duke epee squad, junior Chantal Montrose had a positive record of 2-1.

Temple's next opponent was No. 2 Princeton.  The Owls gave the Tigers a hard time, but eventually fell short and lost 10-17.  The Owls were again led by the foil squad, who beat Princeton for the second time this season, 5-4.

Georges and freshman Fatima Largaespada both finished with positive records of 2-1.  In sabre, freshman Petra Kahn went undefeated with a 2-0 record. Leading the epee squad with a winning record of 2-1 was captain Jill Bratton, who beat two members of the U.S. National Team, 2012 Olympian Susan Scanlan and Katherine Holmes.

After lunch Temple lost another tough meet against the No. 6 ranked team in the country, St. John's. The Owls put up a strong fight yet fell short at the end, losing 10-17.

The epee squad had a strong showing, led by Bratton who went 2-1 along with Georges who also had a winning record of 2-1 in foil.

The day ended on a positive note with a well-fought victory over No. 5 Penn State.  Learning from pervious mistakes earlier this season, the Owls were determined to win this last meet at home. With a nearly flawless performance by the epee squad, who defeated Penn State's epee squad 8-1, the Owls got the push they needed to beat PSU 15-12.

Chantal Montrose and Bratton were both flawless with 3-0 records while freshman Jessica Hall had a solid performance finishing, 2-1.  In foil, Georges went 2-1 while in sabre Tiki Kastor led with a 2-1 record.

Next up for the Owls, now 22-8, will be their first postseason tournament, the NIWFA Championships being held March 2 at Swarthmore College.
