SAN ANTONIO, Texas— Qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the first time in their fencing career, juniors Epiphany Georges and Kimberly Howell, along with sophomore Tiki Kastor and freshman Fatima Largaespada  will all represent the No. 9 Temple Owls in San Antonio, where they will compete for a national championship.

The 2013 NCAA Championships for the women's fencing side get underway on Saturday at the Freeman Coliseum at 10:30 a.m. ET, with foil.

“We are very excited about representing Temple at the NCAA Championships,” hall of fame head coach Nikki Franke said. “It speaks volumes to the hard work the team has put in all season.  We are looking forward to competing with this group of young, talented fencers who are anxious to compete at this, the highest level of collegiate fencing”.

Among the Owls making their debut at NCAA's, Howell will compete in her hometown. The San Antonio native comes into this weekend after placing in a tie for 15th in the epee semifinals at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional.

Earlier this season, Howell went undefeated in her bouts at two different meets and also generated national attention when she was named a College Fencing 360 “Primetime Performer of the Week”.

Georges, a foilist, was selected following her stellar performance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, held at Lafayette, where she reached the finals and finished sixth overall.

Joining her at Nationals in foil will be first-year fencer Largaespada, who was a 10th-place finisher at Regionals and consistently put up winning records in her bouts all season.

Kastor also reached the finals at the Regional, which significantly helped her case for being selected to the women's national field of 72.
In sabre, Kastor put up an outstanding effort to earn fifth place, making her Temple's highest finisher at the NCAA Regionals.

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts.  After the round-robin, the top-four finishers will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the losers being awarded a tie for third place.

“All four of these girls worked extremely hard all season and I am very proud of them for qualifying and being rewarded for their success,” assistant coach Anastasia Ferdman said. “Making it to Nationals is a huge honoe, so I think the girls are motivated and excited to get this opportunity.”

ESPN3.com will broadcast each weapon's semifinals and championship bouts live  Women's semifinal and gold medal bouts are set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
