Fencing Goes 8-3 at Northwestern Duals Against Stiff Competition
2.4.13 | Women's Fencing
Results: Day 1 | Day 2
EVANSTON, Ill.—The Temple women's fencing team traveled to Northwestern University Saturday and Sunday to compete against some of the strongest teams in the nation. When all was said and done, they finished the weekend with an impressive 8-3 record.
On Saturday, there was a lot of anticipation by the Owls as they realized that the schedule for the day included matches against three schools ranked in the Top 10 in the country. The day began with a great performance by the foil squad which led the team to a close 14-13 victory against No. 14 Stanford. Junior Epiphany Georges was undefeated (3-0), as was senior Mikayla Varadi (2-0).
The most anticipated meet of the weekend was next. After a close loss at home against No. 7 Northwestern last weekend, the Owls couldn't wait to face the Wildcats for a second time. This time they were ready. With great focus, motivation and positive energy, the Owls were able to beat a very good Wildcats team 15-12, learning from their previous mistakes and focusing on working together. An exceptional performance by the epée squad, who redeemed themselves from last weekend, led the Owls, going 6-3, with captain Jill Bratton finishing 2-1 as well as Lauren Rangel-Friedman in sabre.
Keeping the momentum going, the fencers scored victories over Cal Tech 26-1. Next up was Wayne State. Freshmen Jessica Hall, Fatima Largaespada and junior Chantal Montrose were undefeated against Wayne State, leading the team to an 18-9 win.
As the day continued, the competition continued to get harder. The next match was against the reigning National Champions, Ohio State, who were ranked No. 4. The Owls started with a lot of courage and were fighting for every touch they could get, yet after a few close 5-4 losses, the Buckeyes were able to build a lead and dominate 21-6 against the Owls. One highlight for the team was a win by Bratton over three-time All-American Eva Nelip. In addition, freshman Fatima Largaespada had a winning record in that meet.
The first day concluded against No. 2 Notre Dame. Finding it tough to rebound after the Ohio State loss, the Owls dropped the match to Notre Dame 18-9. Georges and freshman Petra Kahn competed well, both finishing the match with winning records.
After a grueling first day, the Owls knew they had to regroup and get off to a good start on Sunday. The second day began with the team facing a very solid North Carolina team for the second time this season. Thanks to a nearly perfect performance by the foil squad (8-1), the Owls were able to defeat UNC 17-10. Sophomore Tiki Kastor and Georges were undefeated in that meet 3-0 while Freshman Olivia Wynn finished 2-1.
Next the Owls fenced Cleveland State winning 26-1, and the University of Detroit-Mercy, posting a 24-3 win. Junior Tasia Ford, sophomore Emily Dodson and freshman Demi Antipas were undefeated in those matches.
The Owls next match was against the current No. 1 ranked school in the country, Princeton. The Owls were well prepared and showed their determination putting up a good fight but eventually losing 11-16. The team was led by the foil squad which defeated an outstanding Princeton foil squad 5-4 and saw Georges go 3-0 while Largaespada was 2-1. In epee, Kim Howell was undefeated, going 2-0 against several of the top rated epee fencers in the country while in sabre, Kastor also had a winning record.
Pumped from their previous meet against Princeton, the Owls concluded the day defeating UC- San Diego 25-2, where the foil and epee squads went undefeated.
On Sunday the Owls were led by Georges who had an outstanding performance finishing 11-0.
The Owls will travel to NJIT next weekend where they will fence host NJIT, Fairleigh Dickinson, Stevens and Brandeis.
