Kastor and Georges Lead #9 Owls At NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament

LAFAYETTE, Pa.—On Saturday, the No. 9 Temple women's fencing team traveled to Lafayette College for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Tournament. This was an important day for the fencers, since it is the major tournament which determines the qualifiers for the NCAA National Championship. Temple qualified each member of the team to the Regional Tournament, yet was only allowed to travel with the 12 team members with the best records.
As the day began, the Temple fencers started on a positive note where everyone fencing in the first round of pools advanced to the quarter final round. This was a promising start to the tournament. As the day continued, the competition got harder and more intense as a percentage of fencers were eliminated each round.
Leading the Owls was the foil squad, qualifying three of its fencers to the fourth and final round; Mikayla Varadi, Epiphany Georges and Fatima Largaespada. The sabre Squad was led by Tiki Kastor and Tasia Ford who both qualified to the final round. In epee, Jessica Hall was a finalist.
The top finisher was Tiki Kastor who finished the tournament in fifth Place. She was followed by Epiphany Georges who finished in sixth place. Our other finalists were Fatima Largaespada who was 10th, Mikayla Varadi finished 11th and finishing 12th was Tasia Ford and Jessica Hall.
In the Semi-Finals, Lauren Rangel-Friedman was 14th, Chantal Montrose and Kim Howell were both 15th and Petra Kahn finished in 16th place. In the quarter-finals Jill Bratton was 21st and Demi Antipas finished in 22nd place.
“The Regional Tournament is always a very difficult competition as the top fencers from our Region fight for an NCAA Championship berth” said Head Coach Franke.
The Owls are now anxiously awaiting the NCAA Selections on Tuesday when the official announcement from the NCAA committee will be made.
