PHILADELPHIA – Senior guard Khalif Wyatt became the 10th Temple University men's basketball player to earn the coveted Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year award, the league office announced today. Wyatt, who was the only Temple player selected to the all-conference team, is also the first Owl to win the honor since former TU great Pepe Sanchez took home the award in 2000.
Graduate student T.J. DiLeo was named to the five-member Academic All-Conference team. DiLeo, who earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team in February, is currently pursuing a master's degree in marketing and owns a 3.81 cumulative GPA. He graduated in 3 ½ years in December 2011 with a bachelor's degree in marketing.
Saint Louis coach Jim Crews was chosen as the Coach of the Year . VCU's Briante Weber earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and Xavier freshman Semaj Christon was named the conference's Rookie of the Year.
Cody Ellis of Saint Louis was named the A-10's Sixth Man of the Year and Xavier's Travis Taylor was selected for the Chris Daniels' Most Improved Player Award. The league also released its All-Conference teams, which along with the major awards were voted on by a panel of the A-10's 16 head coaches. The All-Academic team, which was selected by the A-10's sports information directors, was also announced Tuesday.
Wyatt, the Atlantic 10 Conference's leading scorer (19.9 ppg.), has been the catalyst for the Temple attack all season, leading the Owls in scoring 20 times while serving as the game-high scorer 15 times. His five 30-point games top the conference as does his 16 games of 20-or-more points.
The Norristown, Pa. native has earned four conference Player of the Week citations as well as six such honors from the Philadelphia Big 5. He became the 12th Temple player to score 600 points in a season, and his 616 points ranks 14th on the Owls all-time single-season list. He has tallied 1,495 career points, ranking 16th on the program's all-time list.
