ITHACA, N.Y. –
The Temple women's gymnastics team rose to the occasion in the main event of the season, as they posted their highest score of the season with a 192.175 to earn fourth place at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, held at Cornell. In addition to the team's stellar performance, the day got even more exciting for the Owls during the post-meet awards ceremony when seventh-year head coach Aaron Murphy was named the 2013 ECAC Coach of the Year.

City-rival Penn won the conference title with its impressive score of 193.725 to beat out host Cornerll (193.250), William & Mary (192.950), Temple (192.175), Yale (192.100) and Brown (191.500)

Murphy earns the honor for the second time since taking over the head coaching role for the Temple women's gymnastics program in 2007. Despite his Owls having only six wins this season, Murphy showed his ability to get the most out of his lineups several times when he was forced to fluctuate his intended order at the last minute o, due to pre-meet injuries.  Murphy demonstrated a knack for getting his student-athletes to step up when the pressure was on, which helped his squad receive eight ECAC weekly awards over the course of the season.

As for the athletes, who competed on Saturday for the conference title, sophomore Natali Ruzich was the Owls' leader in two events, as she earned a third place medal in the floor exercise with a team-high score of 9.85. Earlier in the afternoon, Ruzich opened the day with TU's highest score on the vault with a 9.650.

Sophomore Lauren Capone was called to the podium to join Ruzich for the floor exercise medal distribution. Capone delivered a routine on the mat impressive enough to haul in her career-best score in the floor exercise with a 9.8 to earn fourth place.

Captain Heather Zaniewski led her team on bars, where she was given a 9.775 to earn her a fourth place medal. Zaniewski also nailed her beam routine, allowing her to take a 9.7.

With Ruzich and Capone's scores on floor, the Owls were spurred to their highest team score of the season, totaling 48.875, which ranked second among the participating schools.

Sophomore Alexis Arena had a consistent day in her events, as she posted strong score of 9.725 on beam and 9.625 on vault. Arena matched floor specialist Margaret Walch with a like 9.75 in the event.

The Owls beam lineup had a solid demonstration, as the group totaled a score of 48.175 with Arena and Zaniewski.

Junior Brittanie DeMeno worked the all-around through which she tallied a 38.075 through four events, while two-time ECAC Gymnast of the Week senior Jean Alban was tabbed with a 37.850 in the all-around.

DeMeno's top event came on floor, helping the Owls to their best score of the day in an event. Alban also had a hand in the Owls second place finish in the floor exercise with her more impressive, 9.725.

Temple wraps up the 2013 season with a 6-25 record and now wits to see which members will qualify for the USAG Championship at Cetenary College, which will be held April 11-13.
