RICHMOND, Va. – Following their 9-7 come-from-behind win on Wednesday against Saint Peter's, the Temple baseball team (12-16, 3-6 A-10) will pack up and embark on a six-game road swing against a pair of Atlantic 10 foes. On Friday the Owls will open a three-game set with the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (15-15, 2-4 A-10) under the lights of The Diamond. Temple, who is in search of its first series win of the season, will send its usual Friday starter out to the mound. Sophomore LHP Patrick Peterson will get the series underway for the Cherry and the White, as he'll look to improve his 1-3 record. Peterson carries a 4.46 ERA through seven starts. Despite lasting seven and then eight innings in his last two starts, respectively, Peterson has settled for a no decision in his last two outings coming into Friday's A-10 duel with VCU.
In the middle game of the set, all eyes will be on sophomore RHP Eric Peterson, who is coming off a plethora of honors for his near no-hitter in last Saturday's start against La Salle. Eric, the College Baseball Insider Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Week has tossed back-to-back complete games. Entering the weekend, he owns a 4-0 record with a 1.91 ERA this season, as he has held the opposition scoreless in 13 straight innings
Sunday's starting hurler for the series finale is yet to be determined.
Senior Henry Knabe is still afloat with the team's highest batting average this season. Coming in at .375, he is tied with junior Derek Peterson for the team lead in hits with 39. Knabe has knocked in a team-most 23 runs, while stretching eight of his hits for extra bases, including a home run.
Peterson is hitting .339 in his first season with the club with a team-high nine doubles and a pair of homers.
Senior Jordan Queja stands outs as the Owls' leader in on-base percentage with a .449. Through the team's 28 games this season, Queja has reached base in all 28. His streak stems from the final four games of 2012, putting him at 32 consecutive games in which he has reached base safely, which is the second longest active streak in the A-10.
Second-year shortstop Nick Lustrino is coming off his most productive game of late, as he pounded out three hits—two being doubles—in Temple's win over Saint Peter's on Wednesday. In the eighth inning, he drilled a two-out pitch or an RBI double that gave the Owls their first lead of the game, after they had trailed by as many as four (7-3). Lustrino's three-hit day was the most he had since connected four times against Holy Cross back in the second weekend of the season.
VCU will be looking to get over the .500 mark (15-15), as will Friday and Saturday's starting pitchers. Heath Dwyer (4-4) will get the ball in the series opener, while Ryan Farrar will toe the mound in the series rubber match. Dwyer ws the winning pitcher in last season's meeting with the Owls.
Last week, the Rams had a break in the A-10 conference schedule, so VCU has been sitting on a 2-4 conference mark since taking two of the three from the Charlotte 49ers on the road. The Rams were swept by Butler in their inaugural A-10 weekend on their home field.
On Tuesday afternoon, VCU fell 6-5 in 11 innings on the road t Maryland. Center fielder Bill Cullen led the way by knocking in three runs in his 2-for-5 day. Cullen leads the team with a .340 batting average, while pounding out 35 hits and three home runs. With a team-high 20 walks, his on-base percentage (.457) leads the team.
Following this weekend, Temple will have off from mid-week non-conference play, setting their sights on next weekend's A-10 series at Rhode Island.
