Softball Splits with Dayton; Wins Game One, 12-7, Drops Nightcap, 2-0

4.13.13 | Softball

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team earned a split with visiting Atlantic 10 rival Dayton today, coming from behind to defeat the Flyers 12-7 in game one before dropping a 2-0 decision in the nightcap. TU is 18-17 overall and 7-3 in A-10 play, while Dayton is 17-16 and 8-3 A-10.

In the opener, the Owls fell in a 7-4 hole after four innings and entered the sixth still trailing by that count. But the Temple offense exploded in the frame as the squad put up eight runs on five hits to take a 12-7 advantage. A two-run homer from Julia Kastner and a three-run shot from Devynne Nelons accounted for five of the runs in the inning.

Relief pitcher Kelsey Dominik (8-2) got three groundouts in the top of the seventh to end the game. The freshman went 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Alysha Isaacson (3-7) took the loss, tossing 1.0 inning of relief, giving up three hits, five runs and walking two.

Lacey McKeon and Sarah Prezioso were each 2-for-4 in the contest. Freshmen Annie Marcopolus and Leah Lucas each hit two-run homers in the game.

In game two, Dayton got two runs on two hits in the first inning, and that was all that the Flyers would end up needing. The Owls left two on the bases in the bottom of the second, and again left the bags loaded in the fifth without producing.

Emily Froment (6-1) earned the win with 7.0 innings of work, surrending just four hits, walking one and striking out seven. Jessica Mahoney (3-9) took the complete-game loss, giving up seven hits, walking five and fanning five.

Four different Temple players collected a hit in the game, including the 17th double of the year for Stephanie Pasquale. The junior extended her hit-streak to 19 games with the two-bagger.

The Owls head to Monmouth for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 3 p.m.
