Baseball Drops Liberty Bell Classic Semifinal, 5-3, Against Delaware

4.2.13 | Baseball

RESULTS

NEWARK, Del. – Playing for a chance to take the field of Citizens Bank Park in two weeks, Temple Baseball dropped its Liberty Bell Classic semifinal matchup to the Delaware Blue Hens by a count of 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium

The Owls jumped out to a quick, 3-0, lead after the first two innings, compliments of three Delaware errors.

Leading the team in hitting, senior Henry Knabe opened the scoring when he ripped a single into right field after his classmate Jordan Queja reached base on an error and advanced to second base. Queja led off the game by lifting a ball in to shallow right field for what looked like a routine fly out for the fielder, but instead was misplayed. The Owls' second baseman finished 2-for-5 on the day, helping him to extend his on base streak to 28 consecutive games.

Redshirt senior Matt Elko  who led Tempe's offense with three hits on the day, added to his team's lead when he doubled to score Knabe after he had ended up on third after a failed pickoff attempt at first base.

Getting the nod for the midweek start, junior Matt Hockenberry took the hill with two runs of support from his offense. Hockenberry got through his first inning rather quick, as he fanned away two hitters and got another to fky out despite issuing a free pass to junior Joe Yezzo.

Hockenberry's team continued to support him. When the Owls went back to the plate in the second, they took advantage of Delaware's struggles once again. With Queja at the plate, pitcher Dan Gatto lost control on his delivery, allowing junior Bobby Heitzman and freshman Michael D'Acunti to advance. Heitzman scored on the wild pitch to increase TU's cushion to a 3-0 lead.

Temple's starter continued to pitch effectively for the next two innings. After Delaware's leadoff hitter reached on an error by Knabe at third base, Hockenberry set the rest of the Blue Hen lineup down in order. Hockenberry didn't allow a hit until the next inning, but then was able to get Joe Giacchino to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Once it came time for the Blue Hens to see Hockenberry for the second time, they showed they had solved the Owls' right-hander.
In the fourth inning, the Blue Hens cut Temple's lead down to a single run when it found a way to score two runs on three hits in the frame. Hockenberry, who's line closed after five innings of work, was charged with only one of the two runs scored.

Redshirt Steve Visnic took over the one-run ballgame in the sixth. After getting his first batter out on strikes, he served up a game-tying solo home run to Yezzo to make it three-all.

Temple responded in the sixth inning in a threatening way. Following junior David Hall's leadoff single, Queja doubled after the next two hitters got out to put runners in scoring position. Sophomore Nick Lustrino worked a walk from Delaware's new pitcher to jam the bases, but a ground out by Knabe ended the Owls' opportunity. On the day, Temple pounded out 12 hits and walked four times, but left 13 of its baserunners on the paths.

In the seventh, the Blue Hens jumped all over redshirt junior Zach White, who took the mound to start the inning. White was greeted with a leadoff double. Delaware would work the bases loaded, forcing head coach Ryan Wheeler to call sophomore Adam Dian to take over. Dian's first hitter was Giacchino, who smoked a single that scored two runs, which inevitably won the ballgame for the Blue Hens.

Temple, who has not reached the Liberty Bell Classic Championship since 2003, sees its record adjust to 10-14 on the year before preparing to host La Salle in a three-game Atlantic 10 weekend series at Skip Wilson Field. The series opens on Friday at 3:00 p.m. All three games will be streamed on OwlAccess.

Saturday's game, which starts at 1:00 p.m. is “Temple Vs. Cancer”. The Owls have been partnered with the Vs. Cancer Foundation all season, through which they have raised more than $2,700 for childhood cancer research. Coaches and players will raise awareness by having their heads shaved after the game. All fans are encouraged to take part in the event. Anyone wanting to make a donation to the Vs. Cancer Foundation can do so through Temple's team page here: http://temple.vs-cancer.org)
