PHILADELPHIA – The Temple men's soccer team has gone through all of its training camp workouts and preseason games, and now it's time for the Owls to turn their attention on the season-opening match on the road against the Saint Peter's Peacocks. The game will commence at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J. Live stats and a live video feed will be provided by clicking the links above.
Friday's season opener with the Peacocks will be a rematch from last season. Temple defeated Saint Peter's 2-1 at home on Sept. 21.
Coming off three straight appearances in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and a 10-6-2 record, the Owls will look to make an impact in their new conference, the American Athletic Conference. The Owls are led by 14-year head coach David MacWilliams, who is returning 14 letterwinners from last season, including eight starters. MacWilliams has also brought in an influx of incoming talent for the season. Temple's 2013 recruiting class was ranked the 20th best in the nation by College Sports News. Three of the freshmen were ranked in the top 100 high school player rankings by CSN: Miguel Polley (#57), Robert Sagel (#65), and Stefan Mueller (#83). Maryland transfer Donovan Fraser ranked as the 102nd best high school player in 2012.
"Our coaching staff really believes that we have brought in a talented group of players that can compete at a high level," MacWilliams said. "We feel very positive about the future of Temple men's soccer. We have some kids that can create and score goals. Some of them are going to be in the mix for starting and playing time in the rotation this season. I think the future of our program is going to be really bright, I really do."
With a big core returning along with a much respected incoming class, MacWilliams and his players have high expectations for this season, including a bid into the NCAA Tournament that would mark the seventh appearance in the NCAA tournament for the Temple Owls.
"As a coach, I want to see our team compete and do well in the American Athletic Conference. Our goal is to be in the Final Four at PPL Park right here in Philadelphia. These are high goals, but if things go right for us we can certainly do it. If we stay healthy and score goals, we will have a chance."
The 2013 season marks the first year in American Athletic Conference for Temple. The talent and play from this conference are a step up from what the Owls were used to in the Atlantic 10. Two teams in the American are ranked in the top ten in the preseason (UConn #5 and Louisville #10), and four teams made trips to the NCAA Tournament last year (UConn, Louisville, SMU and USF).
"We are going to be playing teams ranked in the RPI top 50 on most nights," MacWilliams said. "We have to raise the bar in order to compete in this conference. Being our first year in the league, we are going to be playing in many facilities our team hasn't seen before and trying to figure out how teams play. It's going to be a challenge our team is looking forward to."
The Owls will have to replace three seniors on the 2012 team at the midfielder position: Cody Calafiore, Homero Rodriguez and Andrew Dodds. Calafiore finished last year as the team's second leading point getter and was selected to the second team A-10. Seniors Ryan Bradbury, Sam Speaker, and Nolan Hemmer look to provide leadership for the position in their final season as Temple Owls. Bradbury made 16 starts last season and had a game tying goal against St. Bonaventure. Hemmer started all 19 games last season and scored two goals.
Junior Willie Chalfant returns after starting all 19 games last year. Five newcomers will look to add more depth to the position and compete for playing time. Anani Mohamed transferred to Temple after spending last season at Virginia Tech. Freshmen Miguel Polley, Vojkan Tomasevic, Dan White, and Nick Carroll balance out the position, and they will look to be added to the rotation.
With only losing Billy Kappock, the defensemen will look to improve a season in which they helped limit teams to slightly above a goal per game (1.05 gpg). Seniors Jake Lister, Sam Heller, and Sawyer Hemmer lead the defensive unit. Hemmer started all 19 games last season and led the team in minutes played with 1,760. Lister started seven games and scored four goals in the season. Sophomore Jonah Williams looks to make an impact this season after redshirting last year. Four freshmen, Robert Sagel, Matt Mahoney, Mark Grasela, and Stefan Mueller, will also compete for time in the rotation.
Sophomore Jared Martinelli returns after a highly decorated freshman year to lead the forwards. Martinelli was the leading scorer on last season's team with nine goals and 10 assists for a total of 28 points, which tied him for eighth all-time on the Temple single-season points list. Of those 28 points, 18 came from his nine goals, which is the most for an Owl since 2003, and is the third-most by a first-year player at Temple. Five of his goals served as game-winners, leading to half of the team's total wins. Martinelli became the third player in Temple history to notch double figures in the assists category when he tallied his 10th in the Owls' victory at La Salle on Oct. 28.
Senior captain Vaughn Spurrier also looks to build off a productive season in his last year. Spurrier recorded 10 assists for the Owls and will look to provide more goal scoring for this year's team. Redshirt junior Chas Wilson returns after starting 17 games last season. He was third on the team with 13 points and scored six goals. Sophomores Dalton Andrusko and Josh Tagland return for the Owls. Andrusko scored the game-winning goal against Manhattan last season in a 3-2 victory. Redshirt freshman Donovan Fraser will look to make an immediate impact for Temple after transferring from Maryland.
Goalkeepers junior Dan Scheck and senior Bobby Rosato both return after splitting starts in the 2012 season. Scheck started eight games, made 41 saves and only allowed three goals. His record was 5-2-1 with five shutouts and a 0.932 save percentage. Rosato had 11 starts, allowed 17 goals and recorded 41 saves. His record was 5-4-2 with three shutouts and a 0.750 save percentage.
