Belkssir Vying for Men's Tennis Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational Title

9.14.13 | Men's Tennis

PRINCETON, N.J. – Six Temple men's players competed at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. The Owls had five players active in singles play and all six competing in doubles action.

On Friday, Hicham Belkssir and Santiago Canete were the lone singles winners for TU. Belkssir was a 6-2, 6-0 victor over James Ratchford of Yale in the opening round of the Jersey flight. The sophomore went on to defeat Georgetown's Max Novak, 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday in the quarterfinals before advancing to Sunday's final with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Julio Marcon of NYIT. Belkssir faces Princeton's Josh Yablon for the title at 10 a.m.

Canete dropped his first match of the Nassau singles on Friday before rebounding to defeat Georgetown's Casey Distaso, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (11), in the first round of consolation play. The sophomore's run came to an end Saturday morning, though, when Binghamton's Ismael Dinia hung on for a tough 6-5 (2), 6-5 (3) win in the consolation semifinals.

Hernan Vasconez was the only other Temple player to earn a victory in singles play, defeating Florin Radu of Princeton, 6-5 (4), 6-3, in the semifinal round of the Cordin consolation bracket. Vasconez was denied a shot at the consolation title after a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Georgetown's Jack Murphy.

All three TU doubles teams saw their title hopes squelched on the first day. Kristian Marquart and Belkssir paired up in the Orange flight, falling 8-6 to the top-seeded duo of Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur of Columbia.

Vasconez and Sam Rundle also fell in the round of 32, dropping an 8-4 decision to Buffalo's Sergio Arevallilio and Johnathan Hannestad. Canete and Nicolas Paulus received a bye in the opening round, but dropped an 8-5 decision to Pablo Alvarez and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik, also of Buffalo, in the round of 16.

Belkssir is Temple's only player remaining active for Sunday play.
