PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball claimed an 80-66 win over SMU in American Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon before a school day crowd of 1,761 fans at the Liacouras Center.

The Owls improved to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while the Mustangs fell to 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.

In the first half, SMU quickly jumped ahead, leading by nine, 15-6.  Temple responded with a 12-0 run to take its first lead, 18-17 with 11:12 to go, on a senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) lay-up and free throw.  SMU then went on a 7-0 run to go ahead by three, 24-21 with 6:04 remaining.  Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) came off the bench for three treys, tying the score twice, 24-24 and 30-30.  With two seconds on the clock, sophomore Erica Covile (Detroit, Mich.) hit a lay-up to tie the game at intermission, 36-36.

"I thought we did some things well," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza of her team's defensive effort. "We did a good job of limiting (Keena) Mays in the first half."

In the second half, the teams traded baskets before Temple broke a 48-48 tie with an 18-4 run to go ahead by 14 points, 66-52 with 5:13 remaining in the game.  The Owls pushed their lead to as many as 17 before claiming the double-digit win.

"Our goal in the second half was making sure our defensive intensity was high," Cardoza said. "We got out and got some steals and created opportunities for ourselves. When we're valuing every possession, we're a good team."

Freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) and junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) led the Owls with 16 points apiece.  The conference's best free throw shooter, Williams went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. Brown finished with a season-high 15 points, including four three-pointers.  Shipp had 12 points.  Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Four Mustang starters scored double figures, led Keena Mays 23 pints.  Kiara Perry has 12 points.

"We certainly knew about Temple," said SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola. "I was worried about matching up with their speed.  We're not deep enough to match up with them."

Overall, Temple out-rebounded SMU, 40-30. The Owls shot 43 percent from the field (28-66), while the Mustangs shot 50 percent (25-50). The differences were points off turnovers as TU had 22 to SMU's 7; and points from the bench- TU had 29 to SMU's 2.

"Our kids' day is always a great day," Cardoza said of the more than 1,500 school students in attendance."  There is always great energy."

Temple travels to Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 18 for a 2 p.m. game at Fifth Third Arena.  The American Digital Network will televise the game live online.
