CINCINNATI  – Temple women's basketball utilized a 19-0 run and 61 percent shooting to open the second half of play to come from behind for a 58-47 win at Cincinnati in American Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
 
The Owls improved to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Bearcats fell to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the league.
 
In the first half, the teams were tied at 4-4 before Cincinnati went on a 12-0 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 16-4 lead with 3:40 remaining in the half.  TU had two buckets and three free throws from junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) to close the stanza.  The Owls trailed, 22-13, at halftime after shooting a season-low 17 percent and committing 11 turnovers.  The 13 points were the least points scored by Temple in the first half this season.
 
In the second half, the Bearcats were ahead by 15 points, 30-15, before the Owls started to get hot.  TU held UC scoreless over six minutes during its 19-0 run.  Temple went up by as many as 19 points, 56-37 with 3:38 to go.
 
"It's definitely a positive," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. "We haven't won two games in a row since November.  But we stuck together.  It was a good, positive win for us, because we have some tough games coming up."
 
Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) paced the Owls with a season-high 17 points, including three buckets from long range.  Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) followed with 13 points, and Williams finished with 10.  Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
"Once we started getting steals, our shots started falling," Brown said.
 
Dayeesha Hollins led Cincinnati with 16 points. Alyesha Lovett added 13 points, while Jeanise Randolph grabbed a game-high 14 boards.
 
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Cincinnati, 36-34. The Owls shot 40 percent (58 for the second half alone) from the field (21-53), while the Bearcats shot 38 percent (18-47). The differences were points off turnovers as TU had 25 to UC's 9; second chance points, 9-0; and points from the bench, 30-9
 
Temple returns home to Philadelphia for three games (Penn, Rutgers, UConn) in six days.  First up is Penn in Philadelphia Big 5 action on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
