VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Over four days, from Jan. 17-20, the Temple fencing team had a chance to compete against the best in the nation at the January North American Cup (NAC). The event was held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and featured both Division I and Under 20 competitions in each weapon.
Sophomore Petra Khan recorded the highest finish for the Owls in the final event of the four days, taking 20th in junior women's sabre out of 92 competitors. Freshman Alexandra Keft recorded the next-highest finish, taking 22nd in junior women's epee out of 120 fencers.
Sophomore Fatima Largaespada placed 33rd in junior women's foil out of nearly 120 fencers. Head coach Nikki Franke was particulary pleased with Largaespada as well as junior Tiki Kastor (Division I women's sabre), as both fencers went undefeated in their pools prior to the direct elimination round. Kastor ultimately placed 34th in sabre out of 108 fencers. Senior Chantal Montrose also recorded a top-40 finish, placing 38th in Division I women's epee out of 132 fencers.Â
Speaking to the overall performance of the team, Franke said the meet had its ups and downs. "I think everyone thought it could have been better," she said. "We faced very strong competition with the top fencers from all around the country. If we make top 32 that's a good result, but we only did that in two events. The experience was definitely helpful in continuing to prepare us for the rest of the season, so it was a very good tournament for us to be at, but I think everyone would say they could have done better."
Close behind Montrose in Division I epee was freshman Noelle Baptiste in 42nd. Senior Tasia Ford was a top-50 finisher, placing 45th in Division I sabre.
Behind Keft in the junior women's epee, freshman Rachael Clark was 67th, sophomore Jessica Hall was 94th and freshman Noelle Baptiste was 98th.
In Division I sabre, junior Lauren Rangel-Friedman tied for 85th, and senior Andrea Haley placed 102nd.
Freshman Miranda Litzinger tied for 84th in junior women's foil, while freshman Kristen Kemnitzer placed 106th.
Behind Montrose in Division I epee was freshman Noelle Baptiste in 42nd, Keft in 64th and Clark in 70th.
Largaespada placed 45th in Division I women's foil out of 120 fencers. Also in that event, senior Epiphany Georges placed 60th, Kemnitzer placed 74th, sophomore Demi Antipas tied for 76th and Litzinger was 83rd.
In the final event, the junior women's sabre, Kahn placed 20th while freshman Victoria Suber finished 54th.
"It was definitely (a good bonding experience)," said Franke, who noted that the team has been together for two weeks training and competing. "We finally have a day off tomorrow," she said. "But its been a great two weeks of training and they've worked very hard. I'm pleased with our progress."
The team will be back in action next Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn.
