Men's Basketball Picked 6th in The American; Cummings, DeCosey Named to Preseason Second Team

10.29.14 | Men's Basketball

NEW YORK - Temple men's basketball has been picked to place sixth in the American Athletic Conference while the Owls' backcourt tandem of senior Will Cummings and junior Quenton DeCosey were tabbed as second team all-conference by a vote of the league's coaches.

Cummings (16.8 ppg.) and DeCosey (15.4 ppg.) are Temple's top two scorers from last year, ranking sixth and eighth in The American, respectively.

Defending NCAA champion UConn is a slight favorite to repeat as the Conference champion, edging second place SMU by two points in the preseason poll voted on by the 11 league coaches. The poll and preseason all-conference teams were announced at the American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Media Day held Wednesday at the New York Athletic Club.

Memphis was picked to place third by the league coaches, followed by Cincinnati, Tulsa, Temple, Houston, USF, UCF, East Carolina and Tulane.

UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was the preseason Player of the Year while the Huskies' freshman swingman Daniel Hamilton was named the preseason Rookie of the Year.

Boatright was joined on the preseason first team all-conference by Memphis' Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols, SMU's Nic Moore and Markus Kennedy and Tulsa's James Woodward.

Besides Cummings and DeCosey, the conference's second team was comprised of UConn's Aminda Brimah, along with the USF duo of Anthony Collins and Chris Perry.

The Owls open their season at the Liacouras Center on Friday, November 14 against American (7:30 p.m.).
