Six Temple Fencers Earn Top Eight Awards at the 35th Annual Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA - Six Temple fencers were finalists in their events at the 35th annual Temple Open, which took place on Saturday at Pearson-McGonigle Hall. The tournament will continue with men's competition on Sunday.
Senior and team captain Lauren Rangel-Friedman tied for third in sabre, as did both junior Demi Antipas and freshman Becca Stanford in foil.
Foil had another freshman finish in the top eight as well, with Mariah Slagle placing eighth.
In epee, freshman Safa Ibrahim took fifth, and squad leader Jessica Hall, a junior, placed seventh.
"I really saw the girls fighting today," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "They never gave up. As the day went on they got better and more focused. For our first tournament, that was very important to see the improvement as they continued throughout the day.
"In foil we had two freshmen make the top eight, so that was very nice to see. Having a finalist in all three weapons was also something that was very good for us, to start out."
Two Owls finished just out of the top group in sabre, with sophomore Victoria Suber placing 10th and junior Petra Khan finishing 11th. In epee, sophomore Noelle Baptiste placed 15th, and in foil, Fatima Largaespada finished 16th. Sophomore Miranda Litzinger tied for 20th in foil.
While it was a solid day for Temple, Franke said there is plenty to work on before the Owls are back in action.
"One of the things this tournament does, it gives us a chance to go back and analyze what we're doing, where we are, and what we need to do moving forward," she said.
Temple's next meet is another individual competition, the Penn State Open on Nov. 22. Some Temple fencers will compete before that in the November NAC (North American Cup), being held Nov. 7-9 in Louisville, Ky.
