EVANSTON, Ill. - On the first of the two-day Northwestern Duals, the 10th-ranked Temple fencing team went 4-2 and got some impressive individual performances, most notably from freshman epeeist Safa Ibrahim.
Ibrahim's 16-2 overall record included four undefeated matches including a perfect 3-0 record against top-ranked Notre Dame. One of Ibrahim's victories over the Fighting Irish came against All-American Ashley Severson in a hard-fought 5-4 battle. Ibrahim also posted 3-0 records against Air Force, UNC and Cal Tech.
"Safa was just on today," said Temple assistant coach and epee coach Anastasia Ferdman. "She was fencing so well and was really tough. She fought really hard for some of her victories."
As a team, the Owls posted a 19-8 win over Air Force, a 22-5 win against Wayne State, a 17-10 win over UNC and a 26-1 win vs. Cal Tech. Temple's only losses were to #1 Notre Dame (15-12) and to #5 Ohio State (18-9).
The epee and sabre squads were both 5-1 for the day, with each recording a win against one of the two top five teams. Sabre won 5-4 against Ohio State, while epee won by the same score against Notre Dame.Â
Temple's coaching staff singled out a few other strong individual performances after the first day. Junior Gloria Aguilar went 9-4 overall for sabre, winning 2-1 against Notre Dame, 2-1 vs. Ohio State and 2-1 vs. Air Force.
Senior Lauren Rangel-Friedman finished 13-5 for the day for sabre, and went 2-1 against the Irish. Sophomore Rachael Clark fought through illness to record an 11-3 total for the epee squad, which included a 2-1 mark against Notre Dame.
"We are dealing with a number of injuries on the team still, but all the girls were able to put that aside and focus on their bouts," said Ferdman. "They did their best and the results showed it. Now we need to stay focused because we'll be facing more tough opponents tomorrow and we hope to continue where we left off today."
The Owls will face another six opponents on Sunday, including #3 Princeton, #9 Northwestern and Stanford.
