HAVERFORD, Pa. - In the first meet of the indoor season for Temple track and field, multiple athletes posted personal-best and ECAC-qualifying marks to highlight a successful day of competition at the Jack Pyrah Invitational Saturday afternoon.Â
"I am pleased with what I saw today," said head coach Elvis Forde. "We had a great day in terms of making some headway and moving forward to keep improving as a program."
The Owls had multiple top-10 finishes throughout the meet, including a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:56.23. This is an ECAC-qualifying time for the team made up of junior Demeshia Davis, sophomore Kenya Gaston, senior Hollis Coleman, senior Michelle Davis Timothy.
Two personal-best times were set in the 60m hurdles by senior Kiersten LaRoche (8.98) and sophomore Simone Chapman (9.70), placing sixth and 12th respectively. Graduate student and transfer, Nicole Cummings, placed third in the same event with a time of 8.70, an ECAC-qualifying mark. Sophomores Sydnee Jacques and Simone Brownlee posted ECAC-qualifying times of their own while placing seventh (9.22) and eighth (9.27), respectively.Â
Temple had three top-10 finishes in the 60m dash by sophomore Bionca St. Fleur (7.97), junior Courtney Mitchell (7.98), and Davis (8.02) placing fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively. In the 500m run, Gaston, Davis Timothy, and Coleman each recorded ECAC-qualifying marks.
Davis (40.78) and St. Fleur (41.43) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 300m dash while La Roche posted a personal-best in the 800m run with her sixth-place time of 2:26.84.
Another impressive performance for Temple was by junior Jamila Janneh in both the triple jump and high jump. Janneh placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 39'4" (11.99m) and placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5'3" (1.60m). Â
Cummings was the lone competitor for the Owls in the long jump and placed second with a distance of 18'2.25" (5.54m).
"Overall I believe that we had a really good day," said Forde. "But, we are going to continue to raise the bar for ourselves. The team gave a great effort today but in order to compete at the conference championships, we have to keep the expectations high moving forward and continue to improve."
It will be over a month until the Owls compete in their second indoor meet of the season at the Maryland Invitational on Jan. 17.
