Legendary Fencing Coach Nikki Franke Gets Career Win No. 700 at Sacred Heart
12.7.14 | Women's Fencing
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - With the nationally ranked Temple fencing team going 3-1 in their first dual meets of the season on Sunday, legendary head coach Nikki Franke surpassed the 700-win mark for her career. Franke had 699 wins coming into the day, and now has a record of 702-197-1 in her 43rd season at the helm. At the meet, the Sacred Heart Tradition Tournament, the Owls got wins over host Sacred Heart, NYU and Vassar.
Temple's lone loss was to nationally ranked Harvard, a team that placed fourth among women's teams at last year's NCAA Championships. That score was 17-10 in favor of the Crimson. The Owls beat NYU in their first dual of the day by a decisive margin of 25-2. They also earned an 18-9 win against Sacred Heart and a 21-6 win vs. Vassar.
The Owls' foil and epee squads were both undefeated for the day, getting 5-4 wins vs. Harvard in addition to wins against the other three teams. The epee squad was impressive against NYU with a 9-0 win.
Freshman foilist Becca Stanford went 7-2, while Demi Antipas finished at 6-2 and foil squad leader Fatima Largaespada was 5-2. All three of those foilists fenced against Harvard. Mariah Slagle went 5-1 and Kristen Kemnitzer went 4-1 to help foil finish the day undefeated.
In epee, Rachael Clark turned in strong performances, going 7-1 overall. Alexandra Keft was 6-2, Noelle Baptiste and Jessica Hall finished 5-2, and Safa Ibrahim went 5-3.
For the sabre squad, Victoria Suber finished 6-4, captain Lauren Rangel-Friedman went 5-5, Gloria Aguilar went 4-6 and Olivia Wynn, in her first team competition since switching from foil to sabre, went 5-2.
"Harvard was a tough match, and we knew it would be," said Franke. "Overall it was a good first day of team competition, and it was great for our newcomers to get a feel for how these meets run. Everyone fenced hard, and going 3-1 is a good start for us."
Franke's team and assistant coaches were prepared with a card, cake and flowers to help her celebrate getting her 700th win. Franke spoke to the coming achievement earlier in the week, crediting all those who have been a part of the success.
"It's a tribute to all the teams we've had and all the strong fencers that have come through our program," she said. "They have all contributed to that result. It speaks volumes to the quality of the student-athletes we've had in our program."
Temple will have nearly a month off for finals and the holiday break before returning to action on Sunday, Jan. 4 to host an Alumnae Meet at McGonigle Hall.
