Women’s Basketball Drops 85-75 Decision at SMU

DALLAS–Temple women's basketball opened February with an 85-75 loss at SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
The Owls fell to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference, while the Mustangs improved to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.
In the first half, host SMU jumped ahead by seven points, 13-6. The Owls went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 13-13. After trading buckets, TU went on a 10-2 run to 15-4 run to take an 11-point edge, 32-21. The Owls never relinquished the lead, but the Mustangs chipped away. TU led by three, 44-41, at intermission. Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) led the Owls with 12 points on perfect four-for-four shooting from long range.
In the second half, the teams traded buckets until the 8:30 mark when SMU went on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes, building its lead to 11 points. The Owls came within five points, 80-75, as time wound down, but it wasn't enough.
Williams led the Owls with 18 points, including a career-high six three-pointers. Senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) and junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) added 15 points each. Freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) has 11 points. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) came off the bench for a game-high 13 rebounds.
Keena Mays led SMU with 30 points. Akil Simpson added a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Overall, SMU out-rebounded Temple, 37-33. The Owls shot 53 percent (26-49) from the field, while the Mustangs shot 47 percent (32-68). SMU held a 19-7 edge in second-chance points.
Temple travels to Houston on Tuesday, Feb. 4 for a 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET game at Hofheinz Pavilion.
