HOUSTON –Temple women's basketball picked up a 79-46 road win at Houston in American Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Owls improved to 11-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference, while the Cougars fell to 4-18 overall and 0-11 in the league.
In the first half, junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) opened the game with a three-pointer, helping the Owls to an 18-2 run. TU build its lead to as many as 24 points, 36-12, before holding a 20-point advantage at intermission, 38-18. Williams paced Temple with 10 points in the first half alone.
In the second half, Temple built upon its lead, going ahead by as many as 36 points, 73-37, with 6:30 to go.
Five Owls netted double figures, paced by sophomore Erica Covile's (Detroit, Mich.) career-high 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.), who returned to the starting line-up, followed with a double-double of 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds (her fourth this season; fifth of her career). Williams finished with 14 points. Junior Rateska Brown (Alvin, S.C.) came off the bench for 11 points, and freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald (Norfolk, Va.) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Marche Amerson and Te'Onna Campbell led Houston with nine points apiece.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Houston, 38-32. The Owls shot a season-high 57 percent (32-56) from the field, while the Cougars shot 33 percent (18-54). Temple shot 69 percent from the line compared to UH's 30 percent.
Temple returns home to Philadelphia to host Memphis on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the Liacouras Center. ESPNU will televise the game live.
