LOUISVILLE –Temple women's basketball dropped a 60-50 decision to No. 4/3 Louisville in American Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening at the KFC Yum! Center.
The Owls fell to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in the conference, while the Cardinals improved to 24-2 overall and 12-1 in the league.
"When you have opportunities and you don't capitalize, it's disappointing," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. "I felt like we had opportunities today. We got some good stops. And of course, I like our fight. I'd like one more player to step up and be an offensive threat for us."
In the first half, Louisville jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. UL went ahead, 9-4 before Temple used an 8-2 run to take its first lead, 12-11 with 10:46 to go. The teams traded baskets over the next nine minutes. The Cardinals closed the stanza with a 7-0 run to take an eight-point edge, 27-19, into the locker room.
In the second half, Louisville went up by 13 points, 32-19, before Temple came back. TU went on a 7-1 run to come within eight, 37-29 with 15:55 to go. The Owls cut the game to four points, 40-36 with 11:40 to go, but that's as close as they would get.
Junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.) was the sole Owl in double figures with 12points. Sophomore Erica Covile (Detroit, Mich.) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Shoni Schimmel led Lousiville with 21 points. Asia Taylor added a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Antonita Slaughter had 12 points.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Louisville, 41-40. The Owls shot 47 percent (22-58) from the field, while the Cards shot 40 percent (22-55). Temple held and advantage in points from the bench (18-6).
Temple hosts Cincinnati on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Liacouras Center in its annual Play4Kay game in support of breast cancer awareness.
