Temple Invitational Results (Men and Women)

PHILADELPHIA - After honoring four seniors in the final home meet of their careers, Temple fencing finished its own Temple Invitational with a 2-2 record against some of the top teams in the nation. The #8 Owls defeated Duke and #10 St. John's, but lost to #1 Princeton and also to #6 Penn State by just a single point.

Seniors Tasia Ford, Epiphany Georges, Andrea Haley and Chantal Montrose were recognized prior to the start of the meet for their impressive careers as Owls. Temple head coach Nikki Franke said it didn't necessarily add to their motivation, but that all of them did well.

"They're a very motivated group already," she said, "but they did well today. That's all you can hope for as a coach for your seniors is that in last meet, after four years of hard work, that they have a good day. They all did, and it's great for it to end that way. I can't think of four young ladies who deserve it as much as they do."

Franke was disappointed in the 2-2 result, but not in the effort put forth by her team.

"We made a few too many mistakes," she said. "We definitely were capable, and we almost pulled it out. It was a much better result (against Penn State) than the first time we fenced them. I think the girls just have to believe in themselves and what they know how to do and how to control what's going on and how to finish bouts. It was a very strong meet. There were no weak teams here. We held our own."

Temple started off the day with a 15-12 win against Duke, led by the sabre squad with a 6-3 record against the Blue Devils. The foil team also won 5-4, with Georges going undefeated at 3-0. For the epee squad against Duke, freshman Rachael Clark went 3-0.

The Owls struggled in round two against #1 Princeton, losing 18-9. The Tigers won in all three weapons by a score of 6-3.

Temple rebounded by winning in all three weapons against #10 St. John's in the Owls' third dual of the day. Sabre led the way, winning 7-2, while epee won 6-3 and foil won 5-4. Junior Tiki Kastor was 3-0 vs. St. John's in sabre, as was Georges in foil and Montrose in epee.

The final match against #6 Penn State was as close as it gets. Sabre pulled out a 5-4 win against the Lions, while epee and foil both narrowly lost 5-4. Ford and sophomore Petra Khan both went 2-1 for sabre against PSU. Freshman Miranda Litzinger was 3-0 for the foil team, and Montrose was 2-1 for epee.

Assistant coach Anastasia Ferdman was particularly impressed by two of her epee fencers, Montrose and freshman Alexandra Keft.

"After a slow start today, Chantal did a very good job turning things around," said Ferdman. "She learned from her mistakes and turned them into a positive. She really fenced beautifully and had a great finish to this dual meet season. She's a reliable leader and very mature and I'm really happy with the way she fenced today."

"I put Alex Keft in a very high-stress situation today," said Ferdman, "and I think she did a very good job handling it. She did what she knows how to do and she wasn't stressed out. It was a good continuation from last weekend when she finished in the top 16 at the Junior Olympics."

Overall for the day, the highlights included Georges finishing with the most wins for the Owls, going 8-4. Ford and Kastor finished 6-3, Haley was 3-1, Keft went 4-3 and Montrose finished at 7-5.

The Owls will be back in action next weekend at the NIWFA Championships in West Point, N.Y., which they have won for the last 17 years.
